SHOman Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 As many of you have probably heard, there's lots of unclaimed property held by various state agencies. If you haven't ever checked to see if you are owed money, take a look here. It's combines various states unclaimed property information. Make sure to check your individual state in case they don't list their info here. Some cities also have their own unclaimed property lists too. Even if there is nothing there right now, make sure to check on occasion as money is reported each year to the states. http://www.missingmoney.com/ Here's California's, they aren't listed at the above URL and hold the most $$$. http://scoweb.sco.ca.gov/UCP/Default.aspx Lot's of companies are out there are making a fortune charging a percentage to recover your money for you. Don't use them, you don't need them, get your money yourself for free. If you need help feel free to post or PM me. I am very familiar with unclaimed property. Good luck in finding your lost $$$!
Kathy R Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 I did that a couple years ago and found just shy of $1k for myself and over $4k for my father.
taylor1 Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 I was just talking to a friend, who said they had checked for themselves, and found that the gas co. owed them a few hundred bucks. They told me they are afraid to claim it because there were a few years they did not pay local tax and did not want to open a can of worms. She said that the gov. would look into her past tax base before returning the money. Is this true ?
SHOman Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 Depends on how aggressive the state/county/city is in collecting taxes and how well the unclaimed property unit is run. Any well organized state unclaimed property unit should be doing "offsets". Your friend could call that state's unclaimed property unit and ask before claiming it. If it's in California, they will definitely offset any property payment.
Nice n Easy Rider Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 About 8-10 years ago I got back something like $500-600 that Allstate Insurance had been mandated by the State to provide for refunds of over-charges. Apparently Allstate couldn't find me even though I had been a customer for the previous 30 years and was still a customer getting regular bills from them every 6 months. The level of incompetence or indifference never ceases to amaze.
4wheeldog Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 I checked the CA database a number of years ago, and found that my long deceased father had unclaimed property, because someone got his address a letter off. But, since it was a grand total of $.70, I let it go. Just checked again.....Yep, still there.
Bob Palin Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 I have $38 in California, but the time it would take to get all the documentation ready makes it a bit of a pain to get.
DaveTheAffable Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Pretty wild... I checked. Looking into it further. May be able to recover "hundreds" for myself (definately mine) and possibly THOUSANDS for another family member.
SHOman Posted July 21, 2012 Author Posted July 21, 2012 What California requires as proof may not be exactly what they list on their website. Sometimes you can get away with less. Such as proof you lived at a previous address as long as that info is available as a "public record". When in doubt call and ask. Cal really has a good unclaimed property program. Paid out over $200 million last year to folks like you and me.
Redbrick Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 So easy to check in California...A few years back I checked the database and came up with funds from an insurance policy that my mother bought in the late '30's ...Had no idea it existed..The insurance company went out of business years ago and the funds were turned over to the state......Filed a claim and received a check for about $1800 as I remember..That was at least 70 years after the policy was purchased !..........Looked up for friends and found a number who also had money held by the state...... For Californian's heres the link: http://scoweb.sco.ca.gov/UCP/
Jake Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Apparently Allstate couldn't find me even though I had been a customer for the previous 30 years and was still a customer getting regular bills from them every 6 months. The level of incompetence or indifference never ceases to amaze. If you moved during that time, it is likely Allstate's policies of protecting your personal information that was the culprit. I send assets to our Firm's abandoned properties unit all the time - we're talking big money sometimes. After a while, the funds are sent to the respective state of record. People die, clients move, stuff happens, and financial statements start getting returned as undeliverable. Firms have policies to protect those assets for you. Also, they have policies not to share your information with other branches of their own firm. Agree with the OP, no need to use a service, just contact your state.
