Twinsig Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Anyone out there ever remove cat internals? Why? Why not?
dirtrider Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Afternoon Twinsig Yes I did (gutted) one of my 1150's. Did it all through a small hole in the side of the cat then made a small inner/outer plug to plug the hole. Reason= the bike was fueled to be non emission compliant so no reason to keep the cat internals. Basically I wanted to see if it improved exhaust sound or vehicle performance. It did neither,-- made the exhaust a bit louder & slightly raspier but no better sounding & added not one MPH to my top speed.
OoPEZoO Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I did it on my RT when I found a crack in the cat converter. It did nothing performance wise, nor did it help with fuel mileage. What it did do was make the exhaust a little louder and made it pop and sputter on deceleration. I dealt with it for a while, but ended up replacing it with a stock exhaust I landed cheap on Ebay. Not worth the time or effort in my opinion.
David R Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I did micro surgery. I cut a hole in the the top of the muffler, removed the cat and tig welded it all back together with 308L. I got the same result as the folks above. I think it sounded better before I did the work. I like the pop on decel. I hold a little throttle on while coasting sometimes. It is a heavy little thing. Would I do it again? dunno. I am glad I don't have that heat under the engine/tranny. I too use a techlusion. (fuel thingy)
Twinsig Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 Thanks yall. Those are exactly the answers I was looking for!
roger 04 rt Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Afternoon Twinsig ... That's a clean bike and a clean garage ...
JamesW Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 I agree with what Keith says. I took my exhaust system to a machine shop and had them remove the cat and stitch it back up on my '04RT. I did it because I didn't like all the heat right under the tranny. Would I do it again? Probably not as I don't like the raspy exhaust note and all the popping on deceleration. Wish I could have the cat chamber packed.
Twinsig Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 OoPEZoO: Looks like your medication is working!! Roger: Not my bike! Mine looks more like a truck. Rough/tough and no need to keep it super clean.
4wheeldog Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 I took the guts out of a cat, hoping to re-string my tennis racket. Turns out, it ain't what it sounds like. And damned hard to put 'em back in. (Sorry......I could not resist. The above is a work of fiction, no felines were injured in the making up of this tail....er, tale.
