Brake Caliper Bolt Size? (Pulling the front wheel) - 04 1150 RT

OK, so the first maintenance i'm doing on my newly purchased 2004 1150 RT is replacing the front tire. To save some $$$ i'm pulling the wheel and taking it to a local Honda shop for a new Michelin Pilot 3.

- It looks like this is a Torx head, is that correct?

- Does anyone know what size? (It's larger than anything i have, and none of the manuals i have tell me that information)

- Can anyone recommend a range of Torx sizes is should buy to work on the bike? (It did not come with a toolkit either)

- The Clymer manual says to pull the calipers as part of process for pulling the front wheel. Is this really necessary?

- Any gottcha's i should be concerned about during this process? (From reading it looks like i need to be careful not to push the brake pistones too far in for fear of overflowing the brake fluid)

I do not have the size info to hand.

Yes, you do need to remove the calipers to pull the wheel - they sit inside the rim. There are two ways to get the calipers off - either remove the bolts then 'rock' the calipers on the disk to push-back the pistons to get enough clearance to remove the caliper - there is VERY LITTLE clearance to the rim - be careful not to scratch them.

Or, my preferred method, before removing the caliper bolts remove the pads (remove clip, unscrew retaining pin and extract from the top of the caliper). This allows an inspection of the pads and pistons as well as giving much more clearance for the caliper removal.

I'm going to say T40. Maybe 45 or so. I get out the kit, and start with approximate sizes. When I get one that fits, I put one size larger, to be sure I'm not trying one a bit too small.

As to what size is etched onto the socket, I can't see it. In previous years, I could see things like that. But now I'm lucky to be able to see the socket itself.

Morning Oldironken

Yes that is a torx & is a T-45.

You might see if you have the tool to remove the front caliper bolts in your motorcycle's tool kit.

Thanks guys... Unfortunately the bike came with no toolkit, so i get to buy everything as i need it. But, then again, it's never a bad day if i'm buying tools.
