I am like you. I pay WAY too much for my Time Warner cable here in SoCal. The wife & I routinely watch around 20 channels, the other 200+ channels is mostly crap IMHO. I pay about $140/month. Ridiculous, but this includes HD, DVR and pretty impressive (mostly) Internet access of around 30mb/sec.

I just yesterday re-checked out Dish and Direct TV but even though they will save me some $$ on the TV thing, they are not as convenient as cable and they offer no Internet. So, I'm right back where I started.

Bummer.

I watch cable less and less also, and more and more I stream in from Netflix and Youtube. I get all the nature shows I can watch in a sitting, for a fraction of the price of cable. But I still have cable. I'm just not sure why anymore.

Y'all are reminding me that I need to ride over to my local Comcast office to see what can be pruned. For a start, we have unlimited long distance, even though we rarely use it. I would love to be able to cut back to basic phone, internet, and a half dozen favorite channels, but I suspect that it's not possible. Like the rest of you, I think that 90%+ of the channels in my CaTV package are dreck.

It depends how serious you are. Over the air (antenna) is a viable choice, but it's not going to get you HBO or the golf channel. I switched to DirecTV and saved a bit, but just recently dropped my movie channel package in favor of Roku, a little box that allows me download movies over my Internet connection.

Any "premium" content is going to cost you, but I sense that a lot of people are waking up to the fact that they're being gouged.

A couple months ago we switched from Comcast to ATT U-Verse. We have our phone, Internet, and TV through them now. We save about $30 a month, and have more channels.

Just talked to a friend who installs tv and sound systems. His take. They have you by the shorthairs. You can drop the phone service but that's it. Streaming takes a long time especially at peak hours. Great for 4am if u r an insomniac. Guess I'm stuck

Streaming doesn't take any time, and the only time I ever had to wait for buffering all year (watch nearly every day) was the Super Bowl. All you need is a good fast connection.

Until we can get "a la carte" services in our Fios/cable/satellite services, this is going to be a problem. Congress shot down the opportunity for that a few years ago.

I have hundreds of channels with Fios and most I've never watched even once. In fact, I have scores of channels I've never HEARD of after nearly fours years with them. I cannot complain about the service or the quality, but wish I could eliminate about 2/3 of them.

I'm curious how that is working out for you...

My triple service (phone, internet cable) bill went up to $160 and I was pissed. So I cancelled cable completely and got the bill down to $85.

I found myself spending a lot more time with wife and kids and it was great. Then the calls started. Lots of calls from the cable sales guys. Anytime I put the phone down after a personal call, it rang and the cable sales guys were trying to get me back.

Finally I relented and got cable back for $110. I do find myself going back to the old ways but at least I'm not programming favorites anymore.

I do have Netflix and do watch it a lot (in spurts).

Eventually I did go back

On my HP Touchpad, there is an app called VideoFlood HD.

Allows you to watch different shows on many different networks.

I watch them via a WiFi connection.

Check it out.

I ditched the cable company years ago. Put up an antenna outside. I'm limited to a few local channels, but I don't pay a monthly cable bill. I signed up far a life time subscription to Sirius satellite around six years ago, so I listen to that 95% of the time and watch the six o'clock news on TV. We have no home phone. I pay ATT around $100 a month for two cellphones (me and the wife) and internet access. So, basically, I'm paying $100 a month for all my services. In this day and time, I guess I should be happy with that, but I'm always looking for a way to cut it back.
