Tranny/Clutch help please

Hey Guys, I'm back. It has been quite a while since I visited the forum. I lost the clutch in the RT a couple years back and have been riding another brand (forgive me please)

 

The bike was disassembled a long while back. I have finally forgiven it and am ready to put it back on the road.

 

It is a 2000 RT that I purchased new. It has 128K on the ODO. The clutch began to slip in high gear and I discovered that a bad rear tranny seal allowed oil to follow the push rod to the clutch plate.

 

I have performed periodic maintenance on an anal scale. Shifting is smooth and the drain plug has always been clean. I can pull and replace all of the tranny seals without cracking the case. Does "if it ain't broke don't fix it" apply or should I pull it apart for inspection?

 

Also I may need advise for orienting the clutch/pressure assembly on the flywheel. I havn't looked yet but there is a chance that my reference marks will be illegible after all this time. I will study the manual before attempting this but any advise would be appreciated.

 

I have missed the Beemer. I want it back.

Welcome back Scotty. Please continue to keep us up to speed on the bikes progress. I was gone for a few years and I am back and looking for a new bike. Hopfully I will be able to get back on the road soon.

Scottie, I had to the same thing happen to my RT. I simply replaced the rear seal that caused the problem. On the '04 you don't have to pull the case apart to replace that seal. The other seals I cannot say for sure. I wouldn't split the case unless I just HAD to.

I would see no reason to open the tranny when the only failure was a seal. The earlier (pre 97?) 1100 trannies were somewhat failure prone, but by the time they built yours, they were relatively bullet proof.

 

I hope you took lots of pictures way back when you did the teardown. :dopeslap:

If you have a digital camera, take pictures of the clutch components, with various lighting. Then, transfer them to a computer, and experiment with changing contrast, brightness, and hue. You should find some combination that reveals details that are otherwise difficult to see.

I did take some pics, made notes, and marked stuff. It's just been so long I hope I can decipher it all. My 55 year old brain isn't as sharp as it once was.

 

I was really hoping for some factory reference marks. I certainly don't want to do this twice.

 

I feel better about just replacing seals now. Thanks for the info about the pre 97's.

I found fain factory marks on the clutch components of my 1999 RT @ 97,000 miles. If I remember right, I cleaned the parts with isopropyl alcohol, then took pictures, and used digital image manipulation to confirm them.
