legarem
Spring is coming and before the nice hot days, I have some work to do on my R1150RT. My bike has 75000 kms (46875 miles) Am I scheduled to clean and lube the clutch splines or it can be safely done later after doing another 20000 kms on the bike ? Thanks Link to comment
Lockguy
I did mine by the method below at 40,000 and recently at 56.000 miles. I was cleaning and lubing the starter because of a screech at the 56k so went ahead and did the splines. I hope to never find out if it did any good to lube the splines. I got the method off this forum. Tony, that is what I use every spring.. I just pull the starter then use a long special bent wand on my high pressure air blow gun to blow the splines clean of clutch dust & debris as I rotate the clutch disk with the clutch handle tie-strapped in.. Then squirt dry slide into EACH clutch spline using a long bent metal applicator with a bent concaved end that pushes up TIGHT to the clutch disk & trans shaft splines.. Can’t tell how good it’s working as I haven’t pulled the thing apart yet but in theory it should work as the molybdenum content is high & the carrier evaporates from the moly base.. Even with the high moly –grease- application the grease part soon pushes out & all that is left is the moly part on the extreme contact metal to metal contact areas so in theory it should work about the same.. One of the problems with doing it the remote way is no way to see what the splines look like in the clutch disk & trans shaft (no actual visual inspection).. I do a disk rotational check to see how much rotation movement of the disk on the splines but that could lie a little as the clutch is disengaged so the disk is slightly off the actual engaged high wear area.. Twisty Dri-Slide (also known as Dri-Lube) Link to comment
