How to read fault codes with Multi meter? Link?

It has been discussed, can not find the link. Anybody have it? For a 98 R1100RT. ABS faults while driving, about 3 times in the last month. Resets with startup.

Thanks, fast response. Well if I am doing this right, I am reading from the middle pin on the ABS plug that is not pluged into anything, and the meter is reading a steady 11 volts. I assume there is no fault stored?

If the faults come when you use the brakes, then reset when the ignition switch is cycled, it sounds like you're about due to bleed your brake systems.

Correct.

At ignition 'On' (bike not started) the middle pin in the flat 3-pin diagnostic plug will show a steady 10 volts indicating 'No fault present'. The voltage will pulse if there is a stored fault code and the number of pulses indicates the Fault Code.

All of the Fault Codes except Code 5 (Low Battery) appear to be 'latching' i.e. the Fault Code is held in the ABS Memory until the ABS is 'Reset' - clearing the actual fault does not clear the stored Fault Code until the 'Reset' procedure is performed.

If you have an ABS condition (alternating top & bottom ABS lights?) coming on when the bike is running the fault should be stored unless it is a Code 5. A Code 5 resets automatically at the next Ignition 'On' if the fault is clear i.e the battery can support starting without its voltage falling too low.

If you are getting an ABS condition when trying to start the bike it is likely that the battery requires to be renewed.

Nope, as I am driving the lights started pulsing. Not a major concern yet, but would like to know if I have a catastrophic failure looming.

Be sure to use an analogue meter, digital meters smooth the input and can miss the dips. Andy

Not absolutely necessary, if you have a pro-quality digital multimeter. My Fluke has a fast enough response to track the blips very nicely. I'm sure there are others.
