SAQ electric power question

I am going to hook up four small bullet lights to the mistress, and I had heard that the power socket was on a 30 second kill circuit. Essentially, power to the outlet stays on until 30 seconds after the bike is turned off.

Is that accurate? Are there expected problems hooking up 4 small LEDs to that curcuit?

Thanks,

Dan

Yes and probably not.

Sometimes when you "do something" to the bike electrics it goes into some sort of different shutdown drill the first time that can take up to 30 minutes. Never sure what exactly it takes to trigger this.

4 Small LED's should not over tax the socket circuit. That socket is on the bike's Controlled Area Network... aka CANBUS.

Yes, the circuit you mention will remain "hot" for about 30 seconds after key-off. If you do not want this to happen you will need to install your own circuit, using another source of 12v.

Thanks. No I like the idea of it staying of for half minute or so, gives me a couple seconds to get out of the stable and not stumble in the dark.

I asked my local BMW dealer some time ago why the Canbus socket stays on so long ever since I hooked my GPS to it. He stated that the the socket stays hot longer if there is a load on it.

If there is nothing plugged in, it stays on for about 30-45 seconds then shuts off. Once the GPS was attached, it is usually off in about 2-3 minutes, but even this varies somewhat.

I just chalk it up to FM (Effin' Magic).

One small correction: the accessory socket in not on the CAN. The CAN is a data network connecting computer modules such as the ECU, ABS, or instrument cluster. The accessory socket is connected to the ZFE, or power control module, which is connected to the CAN.

I have 4 LED based lights hooked to my bike - 2 are 44 watt LED driving lights (ADVMonster) that I power off a Fuzeblock but the other two are Skene Designs PBs (Photon Blasters) which I run off the GPS plug that's tucked in the front fork. Both stay on for about 30 seconds after I shut the bike down (as do the GPS units - separate Fuzeblock controlled circuits). Never had a battery drain issue with either and I like the light being on when I get off the bike somewhere dark. I likely could have run all of them off the power socket circuit 'cause collectively they're under 5A (IIRC the early R1200s had 5A power socket circuits but went to 10A in 07 I think). But, having them on their own circuits makes me feel better in the event anything happens to the bike's control circuitry - via the Fuzeblock the 44W LEDs are available even if the headlights or other stuff gets snuffed by the ZFE since it's direct wired to the battery.
