Rinkydink
OK, I'm old and all that...just like my parents told me, "that music is awful"! I fail to see the talent of Chris Brown's Grammy performance. Where are the singers that don't need computer enhancement? Sure, his dancers were good but the 'vocal rendition' and I use that term loosely left a lot to be desired....in my eyes. YMMV Sigh, I am officially old. Link to comment

FlyingFinn
Where are the singers that don't need computer enhancement? How about in the front and center of it all. Adele pretty much cleaned the table last night, simply due to her amazing musical talent. No? -- Mikko Link to comment

Husker Red
I like Rhinanna's voice, but the lyrics are terrible. She just repeats the same line over and over. Electronic crap has really ruined modern music. Most of what we see today is more performance art than music. On the other hand, don't give up completely on modern music. If you can cut through the crap, Lady Gaga is actually quite talented although she was mostly ignored on Grammy night. I despise the electronic dance remixes, beefcake dancers, over the top junk she does, but when she gets behind a piano and belts out a tune she is fantastic. When she gets down to basics I think she is actually very good. Of course, most of the time she IS over the top but there are a few greats mixed in. Here's an example. I heard her interviewed on the Stern show. She told a story about how "Edge of Glory" was partly written about her grandfather. He was terminally ill and about to face death. Rather than lie in bed he wanted to sit at the kitchen table with his son and granddaughter (Gaga) do some tequila shots, and have some laughs. The old man was dying, but he was okay with it. Hence the line, "I need a man who thinks it's right when it's so wrong." His death to him was "glory" and he would be reunited with his wife. I first heard this live at full volume in my car, and this performance actually brought a tear to my eye. Great music moves the soul. Lady Gaga Solo at piano singing "Edge of Glory" Link to comment
philbytx
Most of it was musically awful....thank the Lord for Adele !! I find it unfortunate (and IMHO, unnecessary) that most performers need "distractions" along with their "music" these days. ©Rap being the genre that requires it the most....! Link to comment

DiggerJim
All the good music ended in the late 70's!! Or maybe 98 when this hit the industry. Now you can't tell if it's a singer or a computer enhanced singer making the music. The Auto-Tune is admittedly used by lots of recording artists and now they're taking them on the road too so even "live" they're audio-processed. Personally, I think music has never been the same since this classic opera :-) Link to comment

I used to think all Rap was crap. Then I listened to Eminem and his Marshall Mathers CD. I don't buy or listen to much in that genre, but I did buy that one. I'm sure there are others that I'd like, but I'm not working hard at it. There is so much old and new stuff that I love that I'm not likely ever going to start talking instead of singing along. Rinkydink
Early rap music from Jimmy Dean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myQ1UvJiv78 ---- Yes, an early form of rap. Although I failed to hear him say ho, the f or n word in this diddy. On another note, the b-side to this tune was another "rap" number called Please Pass the Biscuits? Honest injun... Link to comment
Ohio48
I can't agree. Please pass the biscuits won't pass for rap lyrics. No doing harm to a police officer fits the rap thang. Link to comment
Mike
I can't agree. Please pass the biscuits won't pass for rap lyrics. No doing harm to a police officer fits the rap thang. I think Quinn's on to something. But you're right--Jimmy's lyrics were a little more benign. There are actually some newer country tunes that are, to my uninformed ear, rap songs, and veer pretty strongly away from the nastiness of urban rap. I find most rap/hip-hop unlistenable, but then I'm a contemporary of Mozart. Link to comment

Gregori
Sorry, but I've got some pretty eclectic musical tastes - and I've gotta say that ©rap is pretty much spot-on. As far as generational gap - here's a little bit of old and new, mixed together... (The video creator swapped the music out, and it's a darn good/funny match!) Link to comment
