We have a GPS workshop today. That is a 22 mile ride for me. Two days ago I was walking the beach in my swimsuit and a t-shirt. Where did I put my jacket liner? 25 and a wind chill of 8 here.

Yep, single digits here (with the wind chill) for the first time this winter. We've gotten about 8 inches. I shoveled yesterday and today, just for fun and exercise. It will all be melted soon. Back into the 30's and 40's this week. I love this FALLter.

"Wind chill" is a helpful concept but widely misunderstood.

It refers to (your) subjective "temperature feeling" on naked skin exposed to a certain temperature and wind. Most machines couldn't care less and not too relevant for folks wearing clothes and furry animals.

The TV weather folks LOVE wind chill temperatures; it helps them paint the most dramatic picture of the weather they possibly can.

Most days I don't give a rip about the windchill; I get in my car, drive to work, and then spend maybe 30 seconds walking from my car to the building. I dress according to what the conditions will be like inside my car, where the wind ain't blowing.

Ben,

Are you saying that if it's 20F out and I'm going 60-70 mph it's not going to feel colder than when I'm going 30 mph?

Yesterday, neighbor calls me up and wants to go for a ride. I put on my Nike Pro liners, blue jeans, UnderArmor cold gear top with a shirt, gloves and my Tourmaster Transition II jacket. Hop on the bike and meet the neighbor at the street, he looks like the little kid from "A Christmas Story", all puffed up with overgarments. It was 30* out and we headed up to Pilot Mountain via the back roads, 'bout an hourish ride to the top. It was a beautiful day for the ride as well and once I edit out the crappy boring video, I'll upload a bit to youtube.

Wow that is cold and I would alway be stressed that there could be some ice some where. I know there has to be some form of moisture but even a broken water line could send you off. Be safe and keep the rubber side down.

I remember a Johnny Carson monologue (am I dating myself) where he commented on how awful the weather was back east: ice storms, snow, vehicles sliding around or stuck, etc. He went on to comment on how difficult the weather was in southern California as well, because on the drive from his house in Malibu to the studio in Pasadena the sun was in his eyes the whole way. :(
