mackerman
So there I am with the new owner for my '99RT, proudly going through all the bits and pieces - like the stock side cases. I confidently unlock the side case, press down on the handle to show him how easy the case locks/unlocks and suddenly heard the loudest "SNAP" I could imagine as the bright red locking indicator broke in two. The bright red of the indicator was only a little less red than the color of my face.... He took it in stride, but I'd like to find a replacement part if possible. I've checked through several parts fiche diagrams and can't seem to find the right one that shows the locking indicator. Any help out there? Link to comment
SAAB93driver
I think you have to buy the whole multifuction box mechanism. I suggest you look on Ebay. I recently bought a whole new side case as mine unexpectedly launched on the highway and was road kill but some people were selling just he MFB. I got my whole bag from duncansbeemers.com via ebay, I think he had parts too. Link to comment
cruisin
Try this link on the A & S Cycles site. It is part #1 MULTI-PURPOSE BOX 2 46542307620 $193.66 Not certain, but I think you have to buy the whole latch mechanism to get the part you need. It would be wise to take it to a dealer if one is close enough and visit with the parts people before ordering anything. Link to comment

AndyS
Have you tried Beemerboneyard or another bike breaker. You could hunt the likes of ebay for any MBMW system pannier from the r850**, R1100** & R1150** series. Remove the handle mech and swap it with yours. While you are there you can pop the key lock tumbler mechanism from your bike and it is all good to go. Andy Link to comment
Heyfrank
If the side cases are the same on the 99 as the 2004 rt I had this problem also. I replaced the box mechanism but in doing so I took out the cylinder that the key is in. The red tab is attached to that part. I saved the part thinking If mine broke I could just rivet it back in. I found the part and if you still need it pm me with your zip. Link to comment
Mrs. Caddis
The locking mechanism works differently between my 2001 RT and my 2004 RT. On the '01 I can remove the key without having the lock engaged. On the '04 the only way to remove the key is to have the lock engaged. I find this annoying when wanting a handle to carry the case when not on the bike. Something to be aware of. Does anyone know if the '04 can be modified? Link to comment
DFWBo
On the 04, you can just close the inner handle, turn the lock/key and leave the outer handle up to use as a handle, I do this all the time. Link to comment
