R1100RT front brake caliper removal

I'm trying to remove the front wheel per my owner's manual instructions and can't seem to find enough clearance to slide the calipers out far enough so they can be removed. I know this can be done because I managed to do it several years ago. What am I missing here?

Afternoon Dave

 

First use masking tape or use a rag to protect your wheel as the caliper will rub it if not careful.

 

Then removed the caliper bolts & lift the caliper partially off the brake rotor.

 

Now sharply rock the caliper in both directions (with force) until you push the brake pads & caliper pistons back as far as possible.

 

Or you can just remove the brake pads from the caliper (gives more removal clearance yet).

Thanks. After I posted this, I went back and figured out the "sharply rock" part and along with a few appropriate words, the thing came off.

Shouldn't take a lot of force to make the pistons retract; being gentle is probably better, as this will assure the rotor, bobbins, and spider don't get bent, and the pads don't get chipped/gouged.

Hi Joe, I'm with you on this. Remove the bolts and gently twist the caliper against the disc to ease the pistons back into their housing. This allows the caliper to slide away from the disc at an angle and thus miss the rim. Hoewever the tape on the wheel is good advice and so too is suspending the calipers by a piece of cord to ensure no strain imposed on the hoses.
