catmandoo
have a 00 rtp and it's been setting pretty much for the last year and a half.in 2010 i rode it once or twice maybe 20 miles worth.well last summer i moved and my riding got put on the back burner so to speak.but one day i finally got time and went to go out for a ride and wouldn't start.no sound from fuel pump.did a quick check for fuses etc and all looked good,so there it sat. so yesterday i finally got around to checking into it.and ended up pulling the tank pulled the pump and have power to the pump but no go on the pump.doing some checking online and $350 bucks for a pump from bmw.this is highway robbery.is there a cheaper solution?? dirtrider
Afternoon catmandoo Before discarding the original pump you might try removing the intake sock then squirting some penetrating oil into the pumps impeller area. Then wait a day or so, then reach in with a stiff wire or (something) & give the impeller a spin. Then test it again. When these pumps sit for a long time like that the impeller can stick in the housing. In any case, IF you get the pump to work don't run it but a nano second without it being in some fluid or it will end up a scrap pump. Link to comment
catmandoo
back last year when it wouldn't start i was doing some reading, and when it came down to removing the tank and trying to spin the impeller i looked at it as well there goes a day pulling the tupperware etc.but thru time i got it removed a piece at a time when i could spare it.so yesterday it was just a matter of draining the gas,and pulling the hoses loose and pulling the tank.really alot easier then i anticipated.nice article there eric if it comes down to it that might be the option.anybody thats done this got any real miles on it to check longevity?? catmandoo
by looking at the list and talk of the high and low pressure pumps it looks like anything with regular injectors has the high pressure pump, the cars with the throttle body don't use a high press pump.so anything with a 3.1,3.4 or 3.8 should work.the 4.3 ,5.0 and 5.7 use the throttle body.was at the parts store and he had a pump for a 95 pontiac transport with a 3.8 and one for a chevy van with a 4.3 the 4.3 one had a check valve on the outlet pipe of the pump whereas the 3.8 pump did not.
