texasaggie97
I have found a bike in Texas with 600 miles. Here is what the seller says about the bike: 2012 Bmw R 1200 Rt, Blue 2012 RT with all options! Sat radio, Heated seats and grips, cruise, ESA, ABS. Riding life is over for me so get a fully loaded just broke in and serviced by BMW bike for $19999 Original sticker $21985. What would be a fair offer to make on the bike? Thanks for the advice in advance Link to comment
Alfred02
Sorry I am not in the USA, so I am not sure about your deals over there. For the asking money...it HAS to be the bike you want in colour scheme as it's too close to new price. If it is, offer $19000,- and move up to $1950,- as the last offer. But for that money it HAS to be exactly want you want. Having now purchased multiple new cars over the last couple of years, I have decided that buying brand new isn't all that what it's cracked up to be. A 2nd hand car/bike as a demo or very low mileage will save you quite a few dollars, and some other poor bastard has already dealt with all the little annoying problems that seem to be so common with new vehicles, like rattles, paint finish, something not working electrically quite right..etc. Link to comment
DaveTheAffable
Riding life is over for me... Any explanation? 2012 bike, 600 miles? EXACTLY when was it purchased "new"? From where? I don't need to know the explanation, but whatever it is... do you find it plausable? Link to comment
texasaggie97
Yes bike has everything I want on it and it is the right color. The guy that owns the bike works for American Airlines and the are making cuts and he already own another BMW bike and need to cut back on expenses. The bike is used slightly and this one is in Texas so I can see it. I just trying to get the most bang for my buck if I choose to spend this amount of money. I am grateful for all of your feedback. CVA-42
The "sticker" price of $21,985 might not represent the price he actually paid. For barqaining purposes, I would go ahead and assume he paid something less than that. I would also go ahead and assume that his $19999 price is less than firm. You described the factory equipment on the bike. Does it have any aftermarket stuff on it that would impact the value? In any case, determine beforehand how much you will give for the bike if you agree it's everything he says it is, you really want it, and he seems unwilling to come down on the price. The best buyer's position is usually to show with all cash. If that's possible, I would show up with, say, $18,500 in the right pocket and $1,500 in the left. Start with the right pocket. David13
You have checked it out and the story all seems plausible. Don't be afraid to verify anything else about the story. Then, get a bigger discount than that, as the first year, ride off the showroom floor depreciation is the most; more than he is offering. 600 miles or not. It is ... used. dc Link to comment
texasaggie97
I am in no hurry so I can wait if I do not get a price I think is fair but I want to be fair but not give money away for not doing my homework. If I get a great deal I will pull the trigger. I am grateful for this board and the advice I get. Link to comment
Huzband
Make sure the warranty is transferable, you just might need it. Link to comment
texasaggie97
The BMW warranty does not follow the bike for the 3 years 36K? Link to comment
bobbybob
Of course if follows the bike! No "transferring" needed. Link to comment
markgoodrich
I have to agree with those saying the asking price is too close to list. Here's my example, which may or may not be typical or applicable. February 2007: Local dealer had a base model, not in the color I wanted, new, offere it to me for about $1500 under list...something like $17500. I said no, I want a low mileage used one, find it for me and make some money. No word for days. I got online and in fifteen minutes had found a 2006 model with every possible bell and whistle except the radio, 1100 miles. Emailed the dealer an offer of $15, he emailed back he couldn't go any lower than $15.5, I flew out a day later and picked it up.I have no idea what the bike listed for, but I'm willing to bet it was $4-5k more than I paid. An important question needing answer: has the 600 mile service been done? It is relatively expensive, I think. And finally: my bike deal was five years ago, I still have it, albeit with 78,000 miles on it; a grand one way or another wouldn't mean anything at this point in my ownership. You can drive yourself crazy trying to squeeze the last turd out of a buffalo nickel. Link to comment
texasaggie97
Mark, Thanks and you are right. I need to see where he will move and just pull the trigger. Thanks for your advice. Link to comment
Dan5620
Take list price (new MSRP) and minus the $495.00 freight charge, then deduct 14% of the MSRP. Add the $495 freight back on and now you have about what the dealer paid to get it on his floor to sale, not including the bonus (hold back) arrangement dealer has with BMW. So start from there, as to what it's dealer's worth was. I had 600 mile service completed for $200.00, so that isn't a deal breaker. Yes, it is used....I'd say $18,000 would be a reasonable offer. For $20.000, I'd buy a new one just to have the "run in" rights to it. Call Craig at Max BMW in Troy, NY, I'm sure you could get a new for less than $19,000 if you don't need a radio and less if you can do with ESA. Link to comment
imeyers
Call me the crazy one but someone has to say it. There is no way I would spend that close to list price and not walk out of the dealer with a brand new one. I could see if the difference was $5k. For me part of the whole experience is walking into the dealer and riding out on a brand new ride. I want to be the one who breaks it in during the first few thousand miles. I know there is a premium for that versus a barely used one but for me it is worth it. Right now I am waiting for my 2012 K1300S to arrive at my dealer and trading my R1200RT which i also had from day 1. Had an opportunity to buy a 2011 with real low miles for much less. I could not do it. I admit I am mental when it comes to that. Nothing wrong with a slightly used bike but just not the same as rolling out of the dealer on a brand new one. Link to comment
texasaggie97
I agree that is why I am trying to see how low I can get this guy to go. The bike has 600 miles and really is new but if I can get the bike for $3000 or $4000 off the price might be worth the risk. He already has a BMW and bought this bike and American Airlines filed bankruptcy and he need to lean up his wallet. He did the break in by the book and had the dealer do the 600 miles maintenance and now has parked the bike to sell. Link to comment
texasaggie97
Hey what do you do when some one has a lien and can not pay off the bike before you buy and you want to pay cash and get the title at the time of purchase. Link to comment
imeyers
Look for another bike. Only way to get the title would be for him to pay off his lien and get lien release from bank. Unfortunately sounds like he needs your $ to do that. I am sure all would go OK but I am just not comfortable with it unless I get the clear title when I hand over the $$$. Just my $.02. Rationally I fully agree $4k is worth it, but like I said I am mental and irrational when it comes to my motorcycles. I would have to know that it was mine from day 1. I am sure he did everything to the letter. BMW guys are good in that way. But its the maybe that would bother me. But $4k is a lot of $ to eliminate that maybe. Just depends how mental you are with it. Link to comment
texasaggie97
I am not in a hurry and thanks to you I am emailing the dealer now to see what he has coming in. I guess if I am going to spend that kind of money I should get everything I want plus the relationship with the dealer. Can I tell my wife it was your fault we sent the extra money. haha just kidding. Thanks for the advice!! Link to comment
imeyers
Sure. Blame it on me. Would not be the first time someones wife was mad at me for getting them to spend more than planned on a motorcycle. Not the second time either. Link to comment
CVA-42
Regarding the lien issue - - I was in a similar situation about nine years ago, if I understand the question correctly. The seller's bike had a lien on it and the bank held the title. He needed to sell the bike in order to pay off the lien and free up the title. Once we agreed on the price, I met him at his bank with cash in hand. I paid him the agreed upon price of the bike in the presence of a bank officer. He then immediately paid off the lien by handing cash to the bank officer and putting the balance in his pocket. The bank officer then released the lien and stamped and dated the title accordingly. The seller then signed the lien-free title over to me and we were done. Took about five minutes total. Link to comment
texasaggie97
BMW Financial has the loan on the bike so no taking a ride to the bank for a clean transaction. Link to comment
tallman
And it can take a while. But if you go through the dealership, shouldn't be a problem. Register, temp tag/ w/in 30 days title arrives and you show proof of lien satisfaction, get new title. Link to comment

Rinkydink
I bought a demo and saved a lot of $$$$$. I would definitely look into that before I paid that close to retail for a used bike... Link to comment

imeyers
1)Go to BMW dealer. 2)Pick bike, color, options. 3)Put down deposit. 4)Pick up bike when ready along with new riding gear if needed. 5)Deal with the wife when you get home on said bike. (You may be on the couch for a bit but at least you got the bike in the garage) 6)Wife will forgive you. 7)You won't forgive yourself for not getting exactly what you want. The defense rests!!!!! texasaggie97
I agree, I have requested from the dealer a list of bikes that he has coming in so I can get exactly what I want if he has one coming in. I will let you all know when I locate a bike with everything I want. The dealer told me the he can only order certain types of bike at a certain times of year. So it is easier to let him find the bike at another dealer and bing it in than to wait on an ordered bike. Here in Houston we do not have a lot of BMW dealership to choose from. Link to comment
