Just joined, bought a 1999 R1100R last Sat with 12,400 miles, Corbin, Staintune, great shape. Prior BMW's were K75's, older GS and RS over 25 years ago. Sold my HD last month and wanted to get back to a R bike. Passed up great deal on 2003 K1200GT but felt the R bike would be easier to work on. I enjoy doing what I can on a bike. This bike is due for a 12m service and local dealer wants about $700. After that quote I ordered the Clymer manual, should have it next week. I ordered the Autolite ap3923 based on some of the threads and the K&N 163 oil filter in addition to the cleaning kit for the K&N filter on the bike. Afraid to use sythenic (13 yrs old) and plan to continue to use dino oil. Any recommendations on the type of oil. Would appreciate any feedback. Looking forward to any rides in So Cal.

Welcome! You just missed a So Cal tech day a few weeks ago....

And... 2nd Tuesday of the month... Coffee Moto in Glendora. Friends, BMW's, Coffee, tall tales.. etc.

I'm rarely there because of business travel, but others probably appreciate my absence. (Bad jokes)

Coffee Klatch

Tons of things in there for the R oilhead owner. Not your Clymer style of writing...forewarned.

Welcome on board...

I has a 99 R1100R and thought it was a great bike. Yes, easy to work on. At 12k miles it is barely broken in. Needs to be run.

As for tune up... my personal recommendation is not to use a K&N filter. Its main attribute is its high airflow capability... which is another way of saying "we will let a lot of dirt into your motor".

Like I said- in my opinion... use an OEM AF and be happy.

As for oil... well it really does not matter as long as it meets specification shown in your manual... basically any modern oil will do that. No real need for synthetic unless you plan to have a very long service interval... meaning twice the BMW 6k mile service.

Clymer will be good but for the "real" info, get familiar with the Oilhead Technical forum on this site.

Welcome on board.

Thanks for the reply and feedback from members. I live in Sun Lakes a retirement community in Banning, CA. Will update my profile. Sorry I missed the tech day, just got the bike last Sat.

Glad to hear you had a 99 R1100R. What oil did you use? Mine has a Corbin seat and I could not find a tool kit. Book says kit is under the seat, no room on my bike. Called prior owner and he said he also does not have tool kit. Seems the Corbin seat pan is deeper than stock seat. I am very impressed with the Staintune exhaust. Really "snarls" when you get on the throttle on the fwy. At 63 I feel I finally have a sport bike with true upright seating. Glad I found this site. Take care.

My 1999 R1100R was missing the tool kit, probably due to the deep seat pan of the Corbin seat. I found I had a 5/8th socket in my tool chest that was able to take out the spark plugs. To my surprise it had a Bosch Super R6 871! Will install the Autolite 3623 Platinums when I get them from Amazon next week. Does anybody know anything about the Bosch plug. Thanks.

In reviewing owners manual on 1999 R1100R the specs for oil are same as Castrol GTX I put in my car. Castrol is also "SJ" rated. I can understand MC oil should be used if tranny and motor use same oil bath due to possible shearing issues. I plan to change oil and filter every 2,000. Would like to use the GTX auto oil. Would appreciate feedback. Thanks.
