07 RT - what to look for

First post, short-time lurker.

I found an 07 RT on Craiglist with 10K miles. Price seems good, and bike has some farkles - Corbin heated Seats, Smuggler, small topcase, Zumo GPS, etc. No factory radio, nor ESA, but these don't bother me.

What sort of maintainence should I be looking for?

Are there any areas to be concerned about on this 07 RT (final drive, fuel pump, etc.) ?

I currently ride a 92K100RS. Looking to modernize my fleet.

Thanks,

Original owner always helps. Go inspect the bike if you can. Any tip overs or accidents? Is stock seat available with the sale? Service records should be up to date and who did them? 6K service done on time? FD should have been completed. Brake and clutch fluid flush will need to be done; check when it was done last. Tires should have been replace with 10K on the bike; maybe the battery too. If not, both are at the end of their life and soon to be replaced. Overall condition will tell you how the bike has been kept. If the paint looks bad generally means the bike wasn't really cared for... IMHO. Good luck!

Owner says it has new rear tire, one original - which will need to be replaced. Not sure if he is the first owner or not. Haven't discussed service history with him yet. He's about 250 miles away, so I will definitely go look at it before I decide anything.

His pictures looked nice, but they were not close ups.

Thanks for the advice!

When test riding, be sure to check for brake pulsing/grabbing. Also, expect fuel gauge/strip problems, and take a real hard look at the quality of any added wiring for all those farkles...

With 10,000 miles on the clock, the bike should have had at least two scheduled services completed:

- the first at around 600 miles +/- (the running-in check, which includes, among other things, replacing the FD fluid); and

- the second at 6,000 miles (oil& filter, check/adjust valves, throttle body sync etc.).

Has the bike had these done, and does the owner have the paperwork to prove it?

In addition to the mileage-based maintenance, there should have been a number of "annual services" done. Aside from the oil& filter etc., the annual service would also cover a brake flush (you should try and get the maintenance schedule for the 2007 RT, as the brake flush intervals are different than my '06. Mine calls for the wheel circuits to be flushed every two years and the control circuit every four. That '07 should have the non-servo brakes).

Quick update: I saw the bike on Wednesday, liked what I saw and how it rode. I am picking it up next weekend, trailering it from Indiana to Dayton. (I know, I should be riding it, but I have to get myself up there).

The front tire is worn out, but other than that, she looked pretty good.

Pictures will follow.

I have a 92 K100RS for sale, if anybody is interested.

Thanks for the tips,

Dean

I understand I should buy the fuel pump clamp from Beemer Boneyard, possibly fuel line quick disconnects as well. Maybe add the dual horns as well.

Anything else I need to do, other than the usual maintenance?

I'd say you need to ride it. In short time, you will likely find something to upgrade. Many who ride miles quickly upgrade the seat and windshield.

For me, I have a set of Motolites aux lights, added much better tool kit and small air pump. Works for me. . .

Currently I am saving to upgrade the suspension . . .

Congrats! I purchased a used '07 1.5 years ago and have had over 17,000 problem free (s)miles since!

You asked about any issues...one to look out for is cracking around the fuel pump. A temporary fix on the road is a fuel pump bypass. You can make one or purchase one here: Burns Moto

Enjoy the bike!

I think those are two different issues. The leaky fuel pump and the failed fuel pump controller.

No one seemed to mention the front brake line recall or the key antenna issue. I had both done (as well as a fuel strip replacement) on mine. I carry an extra key antenna and I have a fuel pump controller bypass wire from Burns in the saddlebag too.

Jim, (and all)

Thanks for the tips. I'll make sure to have the dealer check for any open recalls when I get service. I've seen the fuel pump controller bypass wiring web site, probably a good idea to buy that.

Bike ran fine on the road from Indiana to Ohio. Looking forward to many years and miles of riding!

Dean - you also might ask the original (or maybe last) owner about repairs/warranty work done at a BMW dealer. The fuel strip seems to be a recurrent issue, as an example. If any work was done in the last two years, BMW dealers and BMWNA will stand behind that work for two years into the future. I have got about 18 months on my latest fuel strip, and if it's even a little twitchy in the next few months: "Back to the dealer."

There may be other things which were handled by the dealer. It'd be good to know.
