Bad Fuel?

I filled up my bike at an Exxon about 40 miles from home. When I got there I noticed the RT was running ratty. I let it set for a few days and started it up for a few seconds and turned it off. I went to ride it yesterday and it will not start. I am thinking that It has some water in the gas.

The bike smells flooded when I try to start it and the plug was wet. First thing drain the tank and get some new gas. Am I going to have to do anything else like mess with the injectors? Should I add any kind of additive? I always wondered what would happen if I got some bad fuel on the road.

Thanks,

Ron

Morning Ron

You didn't tell us what you are working on but assuming a 1200RT you just might have gotten some bad fuel.

If it was/is just fuel with clean water in it then drain out as much as you can & see if you can add some new clean fuel & get it started (you might have to remove the spark plugs & clean them to get it to start).

If you remove the gas tank then you will be able to get most of the bad fuel out so you really don't need to do much else (the fuel filter is NON replaceable on the 1200RT).

If you try to suck the old fuel out then you might add a bit of "dry gas" to help you burn off the water remaining in the tank. In most cases just using gasoline with ethanol in it will remove the little water that remains.

In any case if you do determine that you have a water issue then get as much out as you can then ride the bike as often as you can until you have put a couple of complete tanks of new fuel through it.

Nothing worse for your fuel injection parts than allowing it to sit with both water & alcohol based gasoline in it. That stuff will quickly stratify & corrode the fuel injection parts.
