Cheap, good fuel economy reliable car options 6k

I may be selling my truck and getting an inexpensive used car. Trying to stay around 6k dollars. Needs to be reliable, get around 30mpg, four doors.... Nothing special. Considering civic or the Hyundai seems like a good bang for the buck. Maybe even focus or fusion.... Need opinions. I am a car guy but not this type of car...

Suggestion: go to Autotrader. Punch in no selected brand, distance to sale, oldest you'd accept (like year 2000), highest mileage you'd accept (like 100000), highest $. Don't necessarily buy through Autotrader, but it will give you more ideas than we will ever give you.

Every household needs a truck, even if that truck just sets in the driveway/garage and is used once a month, it's there when you need it.

+1 There will be things pop up that might not ever get mentioned that will work for you. Give it a try. (Although I do agree with the "every household needs a truck" philosophy  )

Consumer Reports' car issue is always good - they have "safe used bets" in various dollar ranges that can give you some ideas.

I agree about the every household needs a truck. I love my truck. It's a 2005 ram 1500 4x4 I bought new. Dialed in with a nice stereo and as reliable ad can be. Its given me zero issues and fully loaded..... But I am getting a divorce.... The gas is killing me.... Since my divorce is near final I am considering selling the GT and my truck (both are owned outright, no debt). Taking that money and buying a compact car in the replacement, and coming up with enough money to buy a condo in cash. I figure I can save for another bike once I have a place to live, or finance a used bike. Uncertain right now, but I started looking

Depending on your circumstances the divorce payments may be a one shot deal now which you can wrap your head around, or if you have kids, you'd better prepare yourself for at least a temporary massive financial restructuring of your life. It is painful, and in a sense depressing, but eventually there is light at the end of the tunnel.

(I personally went from 5 years in ever better BMWs (2000 328i to 2003 530i to 2005 X5 4.4i) to driving around in a $2000 1994 Camry with 150k miles on it and a rusted hood). That car looked like I felt at the time.

Slowly, but surely, with effort over time, the situation will improve and you will get back on your feet. You are making the right moves now, downsizing. It will help you in more ways than one, and in more ways than you may see clearly right now. In retrospect years from now, you will thank yourself. Keep your head up.

Ryan,

I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring with a v6 in it that is a highway cruiser! it only has 70,500 miles on it and has been well maintained. We are selling it since we got a new car. I know people bash on Chryslers but this car hasn't given us any problems we are second owners and have had it since about 14K miles. Let me know, $5,000.

Thanks, that's pretty much where I am.... Mentally and financially. It will be rough to give up my truck and quite possibly the nicest motorcycle l have ridden.. And go to a pos Hyundai... Not sure what I am going to do yet... The only thing that I have going for me right now is a good paying job...My bike and truck are paid for. But right now I feel like life is a game chutes and ladders... For the past 33 years I have been climbing ladders to get near the top and now I landed on a slide back where I started. Only now I am looking up at the top of the board and trying to decide if I even have the motivation or desire to try and climb again.
