BMW R1150 RT - Modify Rear Top Box with extra rack?

I have a standard BMW rear top box and looking to fit a small rack to the lid to carry small tent or extra bag. Looking inside the lid I thought I would have direct access to the underside to fit bolts the lid into the rack, however I found two bulbous inner shell where two locating catches are fitted, has any other overcome a similar problem?

If I was to purchase a replacement large Givi type top box with mounting plate, can you mount this onto the standard 1150 RT top box rack as it has a raised box locating back at the back of the rack?

Hopefully we will get sorted before the Spring touring riding season starts.

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is yes. I had an '02 1150RT on which I had a Givi box mounted. The Givi mounting plate was designed to bolt to the BMW luggage rack. Worked beautifully, & still does to this day on my 12RT.

Wow, your bike is imaculate, pristine, ours is showing its age although low mileage.

That's what I want [top box] and rack, bought a rack but even turning it around on the standard box, it would not give access to fit bolts near catches/lock. Will look out for Givi on ebay. Some cheap copies think from China, but look very poor quality.

I would try to stay away from putting anything on top of the top box. Already the box is far back and high up. Adding stuff to it would not be good for handling or on a windy day.

Hi

With wife a pillion passenger on the back, if we go away with small lightweight tent it's a bit awkard unless we ditch the top box @ home, once at destination my wife missed the padded support of the top box. That's why we were considering small rack to provide extra light weight load, but awkward shape of tent.

I have a question for the experts here in a similiar sense. I have an 1150 RT-P with the "cop trunk" instead of the mountings/top box. Is there any way I can add and or modify my trunk to fit a top box? I am not looking to alter it for 2 up riding, just make a bigger trunk with some back support. Something similiar to what the newer RT-P's look like.

When we are touring and all boxes are full and heavy I always loop a "Helen TwoWheels" strap twice around the top box (and under the rack) and well snugged up. At times (damp clothing, excess warm layers etc.) we have just placed the straps over the articles without problem. If the tent is fairly compact this may be an acceptable way of transporting it...

However I would not like to add any further height/overhang to the existing top box. BTW strapping the loaded top box gives me peace of mind and gives it a solid part-of-the-bike feel.

Have an '06 12RT with a Givi 52l top box that I fitted the Givi rack to.

It only gets used when I'm two up and fully loaded, and even then I'm

careful to only use it for relatively light articles; clothing in a ortleib roll top bag or camp shoes (crocs)

which frees up useful space for more valuable stuff in the panniers.

Doesn't seem to affect handling much, if any, no matter how windy.

There is a weight limit for any topcase.

RFM

Our GIVI 52 is (I think) 10kg.

When carrying the typical stuff in there, not much left for

the luggage rack wrt weight.

We usually just carried our Helen Two Wheels mesh bag there for rain gear or wet camping microfiber towels.

They dry out, stay separate from other gear, easy access.

I have that rack from beemer boneyard on my top box and it works great. I do agree that you wouldn't want to load it very heavy but it's nice for small stuff. I'll try to post some pictures soon.
