Firenailer
Hi all, I was looking at the BMW tank bag at Max's today. part #71607706363 Does anyone have this bag and how do you like it? It seems like a nice quality bag that locks on easily and securely. Goes on and off very smoothly. Link to comment
DocCarroll
I have the BMW bag for my 2011 RT. It's pretty big and is expandable. The best part is how it attaches to the cycle. Very smooth =). The negative is the ridiculous price. I'm not a fan of putting and leaving straps or Velcro on my cycle. I considered buying a used BMW Tank bag just for it's base. I was going to remove the old BMW bag and attaching a non-BMW one to the base. I would not and did not pay full price. I found a brand new one on e-bay for about $80 less. Still expensive but it looks like it "belongs" on the bike. Oh, and it's waterproof instead of needing a rain cover like many other tank bags. Link to comment
Guest Kakugo
I have a FAMSA tank bag. Paid it about 1/3 of what BMW was asking. It has gone up in considerably since then (20%) but still way cheaper than the BMW one. You get a Cordura strap that goes over the plate and you can leave that on the bike at all times. The bag itself zips to that strap. Neat design that allows them not to pay BMW any royalties and hence keep the price down. Have tested it thoroughly in all weather conditions and always kept what was inside nice and dry. The BMW bag is an excellent design, very well put together and very ingenious but it is seriously overpriced for being basically a waterproof tank bag. Link to comment
Firenailer
OK thanks for the replies! I'll look for the FAMSA bag to see what it looks like down at the NYC bike show this weekend. That Beemer bag is pretty slick though! Link to comment
johnlt
One of the problems with the BMW bag is the longevity of the plastic map cover. They yellow and they tear easily. I've seen many with tears in them (including mine). It cannot be repaired easily so when that happened, I just remove the whole tankbag from the mounting plate and put a Wolfman bag on the plate. Works great plus has compartments including external compartments which I like. Link to comment
na1g
I wrangled a deal on the BMW bag when I bought my 2011 RT. The bag is convenient to get off and on for gassing-up, doesn't interfere with the handlebars, doesn't move around at all (so won't scuff the paint), is rain resistant (or will be if I figure out the peculiar inner liner ???), looks like it belongs, and is very well made. I haven't had it long enough to note any hazing or yellowing of the map pocket. I do worry about breaking-off one of the plastic hooks that anchor the bag to the rack but haven't heard of that happening. Pricey? You bet! pete R1200RT 2011 Link to comment
marcopolo
I've had a BMW tank bag on my RT since I bought the bike in early 2006 (110,000 km/68,000 miles). I love it; there's no beating its quick on/off and none of those ugly straps and/or velcro. Yes, it's expensive. The clear plastic window has yellowed somewhat by now, but it has no rips. The zipper started acting up last summer, so I just ordered a new one (tank bag, that is) from Max's BMW two days ago ("preventive" purchasing before riding out west to the UnRally in July). I have excellent results having motorcycle luggage, such as tank bag zippers, repaired at a luggage repair shop. I also know of someone who had a tank bag map window replaced. The best part is, their services are very inexpensive. Link to comment
k9gromit
I got my BMW tankbag for next to nothing (think a couple of six-packs here). It's used and the map pocket is pretty yellow. Having said that the attachment to the bike is BRILLIANT! I'm not sure it's $300 worth of brilliant but it's close. The bag itself is pretty pedestrian, I much prefer my Wolfman Denali - more pockets, better construction. In a previous tankbag thread another member suggested attaching the tankbag of your choice to the baseplate of the BMW bag. I never figured I'd get lucky enough to have a baseplate. Now I'm seriously considering that suggestion... Link to comment

What's a minor annoyance around home becomes a major PITA on the road, so I wanted to avoid that. Link to comment
Lmar
I purchased one 3 years ago in Phoenix. Wasn't actually planning on buying one at the time, it was on sale for 30% off so I had to. I really like the bag. It's easy to put on and take off and it is well made. Link to comment
aixgeek
Love the easy-on/easy-off. Love the capacity. Makes a great chin rest. Link to comment
longjohn
At least one person here made his lockable to the bike with a couple of alterations. Link to comment
Alan D
And it's waterproof. You don't have to carry a rain cover, Link to comment
