So Cal route question

I am planning a two week trip that will take me through Southern California, and am looking for advice. Current plan is riding down to Ojai for a night, then riding Little and Big Tujunga Canyons, Angels Crest, 40 with a detour through Amboy, and stop for the night in Laughlin. Map source says the route is less than 400 miles, which seems ok, but would this be too long a day given the roads? We are not speed demons, and unfortunately this will be on a Saturday. We will be heading to Sedona the next day. Any other route suggestions?

Thanks,

Eric

It'll will be a slow go in Little T. It's very tight. Big T is fairly easy and upper Big T to Angeles Crest is posted 50.

You don't say when but if it's in the winter check the caltrans site. Hwy2 may be closed to Wrightwood.

I ride those routes about once a week and I like it. Only 10 miles from home.

Taking the route 66 from Ludlow to Amboy and east is poor pavement, it's being forgotten.

It will be a long 400 mile day. But it's a classic and should be worth it.

From Ojai I would do this: N on 33>166>Cerro Noroeste>Frazier Park>Gorman Post rd>Co route 2 Pine canyon rd> boquet cyn rd>14>Angeles Forest Hwy>Angeles Crest hwy

Thanks for the input. I am looking forward to riding some of the roads down there. So many to choose from! Heading back north on 33 out of Ojai and taking some of those roads that look to be less traveled looks appealing, but may make for too long a day.

Ojai to Laughlin in one day is gonna be a looooog day.....take the time to ride and enjoy the above mentioned roads- maybe cut this leg into two days....

I checked the route you asked about, 384 miles. Unless you have a real need to get off the bike a lot and take gobs of pictures it could be done if you are used to 10 hour days.

Midway is Barstow. If you need a reason to make it one day, staying in Barstow may be it.

Some like to dawdle and stop to scratch. That route could take a week. Last time I was in Amboy only the memory of what was still exits. Not like you can eat in the restaurant anymore.

This trip will be in late June, so the daylight will be long, 10 hours shouldn't be too bad...unless it's 110 on 15 and 40! At least the hard work and fun will be in the first part of the day, starting early, with desert high speed cruising later in the day, sun at our backs. Maybe Amboy is not such a good idea.

I'd love to take an extra day, but this trip doesn't allow it. Hopefully another time I can do a week down there and see and do more.

Thanks for the input!

Old 66, National old Trails Hwy, from Ludlow down through Amboy and Essex is just another pot hole strewn bit of roadway.

I40 provides just as good vistas and is quicker.

Nothing wrong with taking the road less traveled when you have the time though.

Good roads except for going to Amboy. Still, what a shame to come that far south and miss CAL-58. Just thinking about that road gives me goose bumps (the good kind).

I miss some things about Southern California. Good friends and CAL-58 are at the top of the list.

58 is on the route for the day before on the way to Ojai! That day will be either 25 or 1 through Big Sur, 58 east, and 33 down to Ojai. Thanks for confirming that bit of the trip.
