Skywagon
I loaned a guy my very thin walled wrench for my 1150. He was using it on his boat when it took a dive off his deck. Does anybody remember where to get the very thin walled ones? Link to comment
dan cata
If you were in Europe, I would point out louis.de - 10 eur a piece. Since you are not, search the oil filter part codes for different manufacturers (Champion C301?) and go to the closest auto parts store and ask them for a wrench that would fit one of these filters. szurszewski
I have three - one came with my bike, one I bought from Bob's BMW via their booth at the 2010 MOA Rally, and one I bought at Shucks - the wall thickness on the plastic autoparts-store wrench was fine, but it had a lip around the mouth that made it hard to fit/turn. I just filed it off in about two minutes. So, if you want the "right" one - try Bob's. If you want one "now" go to your local parts store and I bet you'll find one that almost fits and can be made to work. (Or come through Portland and I'll give you my extra - which I "lost" in '08 and didn't find until I was unpacking/sorting the garage the day after the rally...sigh.) Link to comment

I took one of my filters to Walmart and picked up one of the "graphite" filter wrenches that fit my filter. It cost about $4.00. As mentioned above, I had to grind of the edge of the extended rim to get it into the.recess in the engine. I have been using this for about nine years now so they are probably $5.00 by now. Skywagon
Thanks folks...will head to the auto supply. Thanks Zewski, but Portland is a little bit of a drive from Texas...but I do appreciate the offer. Link to comment
druggrepp
I bought a nylon one from orileys auto, it fit the filter after i shaved the edges off, but ratchet rounded out it's hole when i tried to unscrew filter. Next stop BMW for oem aluminum filter wrench, fits perfect, works like a champ. Link to comment
tallman
Sometimes a good tool is a good tool. My BMW filter wrench is in its 3rd decade, looks and works as new. YMMV Link to comment
rich t
I'm using a wrench marked 76/14, which measures 76mm. I'm using it with Bosch 3330 filters. The wrench works on my Vw too. I think I got it from Beemer boneyard. It's made from stamped steel. Link to comment
Polo
Beemerboneyard includes a wrench if you buy a Bosch Oil head master Oil change kit. Link to comment
outpost22
If you can find the BMW wrench I lost somewhere in my garage, you can have it. Been using the K&N oil filters with the "nut" and just remove it with a regular socket wrench. Link to comment

I lost mine in the same place - well, it was my garage - and try as I might the only technique that yielded a result was buying a new one. Literally the day I got home from the rally, I found the old one. Right where it should have been. Right where I thought it was. Right where I'd looked a dozen times. Oddly close to the plastic one I'd bought to replace it. Which is to say, if you really want to find your old one, just buy a new one. Link to comment

tallman
I thought the consensus was no need to change the oil filter. As long as you use the right oil. Link to comment

And then when I lost that, I could just buy back what was originally my spare wrench but by then would be your spare (since you'd have found your original after buying my spare). Perfect.
