Dadrider
I apologize in advance for the newbie question, but search has not brought up the answer. Is there a way to unlock the radio cover, and remove the key with out having to lock the door again. Or is the radio cover prone to flying off unless locked? I have a 96 RT1100 with around 43k miles. I've had it a bit over 6 months and still enjoying the get aquainted process with this bike, even though she is not state of the art compared to the newest RT's out there. Link to comment
dirtrider
Evening Dadrider Welcome to the board. There is a way to do what you want to do but it requires either removing the lock cylinder then removing or reworking the long tumblers or re-working the inside of the lock cylinder to make a place for the tumblers to extend therefore allowing the key to be removed. If you intend on leaving it unlocked anyhow you can just remove the lock cylinder then remove all but the retention tumblers so any key will work but that will also allow the key to be inserted or removed in the un-lock position. OR, what I did on my old 1100 was to cut an old key off just above the top tumbler notch then insert that in the lock. It can then stay in the lock in the unlocked position & not show but it can still be moved to the locked position with a screwdriver or about any key. Of course it is also that easy to get back into so don't store anything important in there. Link to comment

kiwiaudio
Welcome to the forum Dadrider. Trying to read between the lines in your question, i assume you want to open the door while riding? If this is the case, its not recommended of course, but i do it all the time to adjust the radio. I have a spare key that has a very low profile head, and i just leave it in the lock. It cannot fall out when the door is open as long as the lock is in the open position. I throw it in my pocket when stopping on the road. I've intended to glue a knob to the key, but have not got around to it yet. This key came with my used bike, so i don't know what would be involved with getting one purchased or made. Link to comment
Alfred02
You can buy blank keys on EBay. Then just simply go to a Locksmith and get the key cut. Most of the time they sell them as pairs or even 3. Link to comment
