What to do, where to go in Phoenix?

Taking a winter break next week. Staying in the Scottsdale area and don't want to take anything more then day trips. I don't golf but do plan on going to a few "Diners, drive-ins and dives". Also Sedona of course.

Will also be checking out condos for a possible winter place in the future.

Sedona wth iits red rock is a nice place to visit. It's about 1 1/2 hrs north on I-17. If you are interested in art, Jerome is kind of neat. Its an old mining town built on the side of a mountain. Lots of small shops and galleries. The Haunted Hamburger House has luncheon specials, I.e. 2 for 1 hamburgers on Wednesdays.

In Scottsdale we like to spend time in Old Town. The 2 block Art Gallery area on Main St. & Scottdale road ( 2 blocks W on Main St) has 40+ galleries.

Anthem Way Factory Outlet mall is 30 mins N on I-17. If you like Mexican Food go to Roberto's in Anthem City. It's the first exit when leaving Athem Way on your way back to Phoenix. It was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Great food and cheap.

In Old town we like Frank and Lupes Mexican Restaurant. It's authentic Mexican restaurant with a nice outdoor patio. Meals are around $10 to $12. It's a frequent visit for us.

In December we tried The Mission in Old Scottsdale. Rated #1 restuarant in Scottsdale. Very nice, wine, entries etc will cost $100-$120.00 for a couple.

Think it may have been on Diners - Chino Bandito is kind of funky and cool.

Monti's Steak House in Tempe. Down in the old riverbed. Incredible food last time I was there. Second-largest grossing steakhouse in the U.S.

If you're going to go to Sedona, I highly recommend renting a Jeep and do some off roading. That's how to see the real beauty of the area. There are numerous trails that are scenic and not too difficult. Rent from Barlow Jeeps in Sedona. They are the best. Nena Barlow is the owner and personal friend of mine.

I'd also recommed hiking Camelback Mountain and/or Piestewa Peak, both in the downtown Phoenix areas. Where else can you hike to the top of a peak in the middle of a major metro area. Great views!

Take a drive out to Tortilla Flat. Very scenic drive not too far from Scottsdale. Head east to Apache Junction. Take AZ88 to Tortilla Flat.

Visit Mill Ave (the college hang out for ASU). Lots of cool restaurants. One of my favorites is Rula Bula, an Irish Pub with a great outdoor patio.

Joe's Farm Grill in Gilbert was on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Great little place. Excellent BBQ.

Take a drive to the top of South Mountain. Great view of the city. Head south on Central Ave. It dead ends at the entrance of South Mountain park.

I used to enjoy rides up to the scenic overlook on South Mountain; great view of the entire Sun Valley. Wow, this was way back in the '80's when I lived in Phoenix for about a year, so it's been a while since I was last on that mountain :smirk:

Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West is just outside Scottsdale and well worth the visit. Warning - once you start touring (if you haven't started already) FLW's projects you'll be addictive and you will seek them out wherever you tour.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. Got lots of ideas to fill my week. Leaving just as a cold front is headed this way.
