LBump
A 340 Ton 'Rock' that was blasted from a local Riverside,CA. quarry and later "discovered" by artist Michael Heizer (how does one 'discover' a rock) will be wrapped in plastic and moved to a new location at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It's been years in the planning and it's about to be make the journey. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/28/arts/design/levitated-mass-a-340-ton-artwork-on-detour-to-los-angeles.html?_r=3&src=tp http://lacma.wordpress.com/2011/10/17/levitated-mass-progress-report/ Link to comment
JohnnyJ
I have often wondered how these artists, who do outrageous things, make their living. I am glad they do because I support the art's even in all its craziness. Johnny J Link to comment
enfoman
I could roll off a ton of leftist comments right now but that wouldn't measure up to the weight of the matter! Link to comment
Polo
I knew I should've paid some attention in "Art Appreciation" class instead of just flirting with the Art Majoretes. All I see is a damn big pebble. Couldn't they just break it into smaller pieces and reassemble it at the museum? Link to comment
Rougarou
Recently, I was in Seattle and took a city tour. The tourguide stated that if a structure is built utilizing public funds that 1% of the funding had to be devoted to art. We passed in front of Seahawks Stadium about the time he stated this and he pointed out the boulder's. One real, one cast in bronze, value 1% of the cost of the stadium construction $4.3million,....according to the tour guide. Link to comment
Quinn
I think that art should be like poetry. It should resonate with an audience; evoking memories and feelings. It should have a purpose that it conveys. And it should be crafted; every line should have a reason to be in that exact place. Every brushstroke, chisel mark, etc. should be chosen as fitting the purpose. Any poem or piece of art that has to be explained to the audience is a failure. I remember going to our city art museum with a friend. When he saw an abstract metal structure, his comment was, "I don't know if it's art, but I do know it ain't good welding." ----- Link to comment
upflying
I'd love to see the 196 wheel transporter. Something like this? Link to comment
ESokoloff
Yeah, that's my take on this thing. The rigging and transporting of the rock is art to me. Link to comment
OoPEZoO
I remember going to our city art museum with a friend. When he saw an abstract metal structure, his comment was, "I don't know if it's art, but I do know it ain't good welding." ----- HA HA.......somewhat similar story. My Sister is an artsy type of person who is also pretty handy with most things mechanical. When she was in High School, she combined two of her favorite classes (Art and Metal Shop). She made a whole assortment of weird crap that sat behind my parents house rusting for the following decade. Anyway, She invited my Grandparents to the big end of year art show at the high school her senior year. She walked them around prowdly showing off all of her creations. My Grandmother politely oooed and aaaed, but all my grandfather did was inspect her welds and give her crap about them That story comes up every time a welder gets pulled out around the house. Glad my sister is a good sport Link to comment
leikam
One could also say that this is a waste of millions. 9 of them to be exact. This rock may not work out to be a revolutionary artistic statement but then the art world is littered with "visionary" pieces which didn't get the reception the artist had hoped for. Link to comment
