w2ge
I have a 2010 R12T... during the early summer I had my 6K service and after picking up my bike, and going for a ride, I noticed oil all over the right side of my bike (in 2010+, twin-cam the filler is on the right cylinder head) and on my riding pants.. looking down I instantly noticed it coming from the filler cap. It was loose and had a big rubber washer on it? I added some oil, called the dealer and told them about the issue. Brought the bike back, I was told that they admitted they did not have the "right" rubber washer so they used one they thought would fit... Now, I had added oil a few times before and NEVER remembered any washer of any sort there.. they showed me the microfiche on the bike and YES, it specifies a washer is used. (diff. part number than 2009 and earlier) They got me one and actually it fits well, (and it is visible) and no more leaks... But, I looked at every model that was on the dealer floor (2010+) and NONE had the washer? My point, it is listed in the microfiche... (line below is from MAXBMW fiche) I know my bike didn't have it, haven't seen it on other bikes? Does anyone have it on theirs? Kinda odd... 14 07119904950 O-RING - 27X3,2 1 $2.41 Link to comment
Hank in WV
I have one on mine but I bought my bike used. It may have been put in after the fact. Link to comment
TestPilot
Phil, First, are you talking about a washer or an O-ring, as there is a significant difference? According to the Max BMW online fiche, the O-ring, part number 07 11 9 904 950, is used on ALL R1200s, both hexhead and camhead. Link to comment
w2ge
Sorry, It's an rubber O-RING... shown on the micro-fiche, but not included on any 2010+ bike from the factory, as far as I can tell. I really think the microfiche is still "showing" the part.. but BMW discontinued using them. I've seen this type of error before, and often when model changes occur... Link to comment
GRB60
If it's not needed, why did the bike leak? From your statement I'll assume mine doesn't have the ring (can't remember seeing one when I did the first service) and I've had no leak. Was yours not tightened after the dealer filled it? w2ge
It leaked because the O-Ring they put on was the wrong size, and it really wasn't tightened properly (or maybe because of the improper sized "bulk" of the O-Ring it would not allow it to "tighten properly." Now I have the "so-called" proper rubber O-Ring.. and it seals fine. Go look at your filler plug.. Betcha it is not there, and you would see it, bulging a bit, all around the base of the plug flange. it is not "hidden" below the plug.. it is visible. If you do have one, I would be VERY surprised. Hank in WV
Mine can't be seen until you remove the plug. It sits at the bottom of the hole. Link to comment
w2ge
So are you saying it is almost "internal"? Her's a pic of mine with the "ring".. as you can see it is bulging around the flange... All the showroom bikes I have looked at.. it is not there. I know this is not a "biggie", but I'm really curious. Does your look like mine? (and came that way?) Link to comment
Hank in WV
Mine does not look like that. Mine sits at the bottom of the hole and the end of the plug squeezes on it at the end of its travel. I don't know if this is original or not but works quite well. Link to comment
RTs4me
It's probably the correct O-ring, but installed wrongly. The O-ring should sit at the bottom of the threaded hole in the rocker cover, with the plug screwed in to press against it at the bottom of the threads. It looks like the O-ring has been (incorrectly) stretched over the plug, then the plug has been screwed in. Providing the O-ring hasn't been overstretched, so it can't recover it's original dimensions, you may be able to re-use it. If it's permanently deformed, it will need to be replaced. Link to comment
w2ge
Oooohhh! Gotcha... to tell you the truth, I'm thinking of leaving it the way it is, as it certainly seals correctly now, but I will replace it at the next oil change, and place it as you mentioned. (I'm thinking it has been stretched for too long, and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".) Now, it all makes sense.. and why I you can't see the O-ring on the 2010+ bikes Now I'm wondering if I have both? (I'll take a looksee this evening) Link to comment
RTJohn
My RT has one. It seals the fill cap against the valve cover. Link to comment
w2ge
RTJohn.. so is yours like mine (see my pic) and did it come that way? or after a service? Link to comment
