been doing research on this site and Advrider. found a couple suggestitons but the tents I liked were older models and not sold. Ideally three person tent, say around 49sq ft, with around 56" inside height is what I am looking for. will be camping at race tracks. would ideally like freestanding. will be using air mattress sleeping bag, and have very small portable air conditioner for hot summer nights.

current top of the list is this item, but little bigger foot print than I would like.

I bought my tent from sierratradingpost.com for about 1/2 the cost of what it should have been. Even if you are just researching, they tend to have very well written customer reviews for most of their products.

The REI near me just had one of their Members Only Scratch and Dent sales, which are an excellent way to pick up good gear for cheap. Each store has its sale at on a different date, so perhaps one of the others has a sale coming up soon.

Although it doesn't apply to Scratch and Dent purchases, REI-branded gear comes with what amounts to a lifetime warranty; if something fails, bring it back, and they'll replace it. I had a zipper fail on a jacket that was at least 5 years old, and they told me to go over to a rack and pick out a new one. I didn't like anything available at the time, so they said they would replace the zipper if I was willing to wait a few days for the work to be done. Keep your sales receipts.

correct, was looking at REI Habitat 4. ideally something about 80% of that size, but might end up with something like that. it is for camping at track days. and I go to track days with diesel 2500 ram truck, so it might be able to handle the extra weight :-)

Should be able to haul it! I've got a Half Dome 2 for moto camping. It's a good value for the quality you get There's a Half Dome 4, but it looks like you'd have to give up the height you'd like.

When we sold the toy hauler in 2004, we still had some stateside time left and off-road trips to go on so we bought a Wal-mart tent. We have used the crap outta that tent ever since and not so much as a fray in anything. It is a two room tent, I don't know the square footage, but it's decently big, and one can stand up in it.

Say what you will, but sometimes, cheap gear really does last.

+1. I've had very good tents and very cheap tents. They all leak if it rains hard enough and they all melt if you fling a flaming marshmallow onto it. For non-critical weekend camping go get a big cheap tent and then get a new one in a few years if you need to.

A while back I had four-season tent by North Face that was absolutely waterproof. I was in snowstorms and all-day downpours in that thing and not a drop of moisture got through. Of course, I can't think of many worse places to pass a rainy day than zipped inside a two-man tent.

I dunno, we've been in some nasty downpours and have stayed completely dry in that tent. BTW, we still have that cheapo tent and still use it.

For me, the best part about a cheap tent is it removes the anxiety from the camping trip. I'm not all wigged out about a rock tearing through the floor or an ember hitting it or whatever. I don't worry about mice or moths or mildew or dry-rotting when I store it.

How about out in the rain without a tent? :)

I know from another thread that you're planning on camping at Jennings. Whilst I don't have a recommendation on tents, I can tell you this. It gets damned COLD out there. Be sure you have a sleeping bag rated to at least 30f unless it's past March. And if your bag has vents, be sure they're closed. DAMHIK. :P

A silk liner adds warmth w/out much bulk.

We carry two when camping along w/a couple microfleece throws .

There are a bunch of things you can do to up the warmth rating.

We went 40 degree zip together Xlong bags and have room to carry the extras in cold weather (on the bike) as we like to be comfortable.

(inflatable air matresses/pillows etc.)

If using the truck we use our big tent which I can sortalmost stand up in at the center pole.

A good point!

interesting, as I am very torn between small ceramic heater or not. of course there always the chance of fire, but a fire could come from a nearby night fire spark. On the other hand I just got the 40+ bag, and I have very nice mid weight long johns, so I am thinking why take the chance. I am tempted to just get a good pop up tent, put it over the back of my truck bed and just sleep off the ground in the truck bed. about as low cost as you can get. then use the pop up to sit under during the day. For this first event I may just try that.

The REI Habitat 4 is worth a look. Maybe a little bigger than what you're looking for, though.

I have an older model Hobitat 4 that I really like. The newer models rain fly look to have better coverage than mine but I have never gotten wet yet although I haven't been in a heavy wind storm. I am a big guy a love the fact that I can stand up and get dressed in the morning plus I have a dry "porch" that I can lounge under on the rainy days.
