Paul Mihalka Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 In the process of replacing the rear brake disk, I found that on the flange where the disk mounts at the bolt holes one piece was broken off and the other bolt holes had cracks in them. As the flange will be off, any suggestions to go deeper and replace anything else? This rear drive has about 60K miles on it. Any help/opinions appreciated.
OoPEZoO Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be a new development. Looks like that flange and the fuel pump flange have been the 1200 weak points so far. examples.... Link 1 Link 2 Link 3 There are good failure pics in the last link. NOT something you would want to have happen on the road.
Angel Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Wow, buddy of mine in tX just told me about he had this issue repaired just a few months ago on a 2005 RT. Gonna check mine TODAY! Anybody DIY this repair?
TestPilot Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 I STRONGLY recommend anyone who experiences this problem file a report with NHTSA. Here's a link to the Office of Defects Investigation Safety Complaint web site: Link. BMW seems to have a history of stonewalling individuals who complain about these types of problems, as witnessed by the ongoing R1200 fuel pump flange issues. The Feds can't initiate a recall without input from consumers, so the complaints filed, the stronger the case for a recall.
OoPEZoO Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Anybody DIY this repair? A few guys over on ADV have repaired it themselves. You need a puller to remove the damaged flange. Then heat the new flange in the oven. 350 degrees for 45 min seems to be the magic combinations. Then the new flange slides right back into place over the splined hub. Looks like the flange is $260+........ouch. Thats a salty price for an obviously defective part.
Paul Mihalka Posted January 8, 2012 Author Posted January 8, 2012 "Looks like the flange is $260+........ouch. Thats a salty price for an obviously defective part." Well, I didn't have ANY other repair for the last 90K miles. I can live with it.

I think that would be perfectly understandable for a "wear and tear" part, but that flange should last the life of the motorcycle. The pictures of the failures point directly towards either a faulty design or defective material. Its just disappointing.
aggieengineer Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 It would also be nice if that $260 part had been redesigned with greater strength around the bolt holes.
Paul Mihalka Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 It would also be nice if that $260 part had been redesigned with greater strength around the bolt holes. Apparently it is. Part no. has changed. Unofficial info is that the new one is steel. I'll see when I get the new part.
TestPilot Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Paul, Do you know when the part number changed?
Paul Mihalka Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 There has been more than one change over the years. The last previous part no. is 33117699631. The newest number is 33117722831, must be used in conjunction with a new spacer ring 33118521832 - which means the new part is slimmer than the old one. The change must have been recent. Checked last Saturday on the shop computer, BMW had one in stock worldwide of the old number but several of the new one and the MAX BMW parts fiche that does not have the latest update still shows the old number incl. for '10/11 .

Wow... It's a good thing I don't use the brakes all that much.
Paul Mihalka Posted January 29, 2012 Author Posted January 29, 2012 Got the new brake disk flange and it is VERY different from the old one. It is not aluminum, but steel! The center is thinner than before and has to be installed with a spacer ring. The job was done in the shop, I brought it home today. Pictures: Old flange (see broken and cracked mounting points), front and back: New flange:
longjohn Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Thanks for the pics Paul. It looks as though BMW goes overboard at times in the effort to save weight on these bikes.
