Medic Mike Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Just came across this from a GW Forum. NC Bans Trucks
wbrissette Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I was out there a few years ago and we were at the end of the dragon on the overlook. We stopped for a couple of minutes, then started to head back to Suches where we were staying. I'm still not sure where or how the Semi got onto the road, but we ended up riding behind him for nearly 4 miles. It was painful and I couldn't believe how lucky he was that there wasn't any traffic heading the opposite direction because he was on both sides of the road. Wayne
racer7 Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I'd expect this to bring legal challenges but it makes sense- and shouldn't have taken the fatalities attributed to trucks blocking both lanes around blind corners to make it happen. The Dragon cetainly doesn't qualify as the nicest motorcycle pavement in that part of the world but at least it is now a little safer. Given that rockslides in the late winter /spring can often block one or more of the 3 key roads through them in that part of the world, it will be inteeresting to see what they do if the others get blocked for a few weeks. Its a long way round if "none" is your option.
Kathy R Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I never could fathom those trucks on those roads, but the drivers were highly motivated. I understand that without access to this route it will be a LONG way round for the truckers.
Guest Kakugo Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I really would like to know if this decision is politically motivated or dictated by safety concerns. We have a few roads that are closed to trucks here: the problem is modern lorries, as big as they are, just cannot squeeze through them. Of course the ban is regularly ignored and you get the regular newspaper piece about the fire brigade having to labor for hours to unstuck a big lorry from a tight turn. Tight turns and narrow roads are not very friendly to semi's...
tallman Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Video link check out after the first minute how many times entire road is overrun by semi and in the first minute how many riders have to pull over.
Sonor Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 $*&%% Just like North Carolina!! I was just gettin' ready to take my turnpike double out for a Sunday afternoon spin on the dragon. DANG ...
