kudzu Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 There must be some tequila experts on BMWST - searching "tequila" yeilds a bazillion hits. I read many before giving up that approach. The hay stack was just too big! If you wanted to give a lady, who enjoys tequila, a very special bottle of "sippin' tequila" for Christmas, what would be your first choices? The price range depends on what you have to spend to get an exceptional tequila. In other words, I do not want to throw money away but I will pay for value. Suggestions?
Rinkydink Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Yes, there are many choices. Does she use it in a drink or are you talking shots? I prefer Patron myself although there are plenty more authentic south of the border tequilas available. As a rule I only use clear for shots and anything else goes in margaritas etc. YMMV I'm sure one of the more southwestern amigos will chime in soon...
tallman Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Don Julio 1942 Best of the best winner, under $100. For everyday smooth, Don Julio Anejo. Like Skawtch, YMMV.
chrisolson Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Corazon, Blanco or Reposado depending on which style she prefers.
Firenailer Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Patron XO Cafe is a very nice sipping taquila made with coffee liquor. A nice change of pace and always a hit!
Jake Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 For a nice sipping Reposado that has great value, I enjoy Corralejo, if you can find it. They make a nice Anejo as well, but I prefer Reposados in general. Review While Patron is often cited and suggested, for a local liquor store pick up (despite the celebrity attachment) I prefer Cabo Wabo to Patron despite the reviews to the contrary.
Calvin (no socks) Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 I second the Don Julio Anejo...I sip it at room temperature from a snifter!
SteveMc Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Jose Quervo Reserva de la Familia, a little pricey, I don't like paying for the fancy box. The Don Julio 1942 would be my number 2. Both excellent for sippin.
doc47 Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Classifications of tequila The price of tequila has gone up so damned much. I'd expect she'll be happy with a nice reposado. Personally, I've always like Sauza's products, but after the first one or two who the hell cares???????? Just don't forget to invite me over. I'll even bring the limes!
Polo Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 A subject in which I can boast vast experience. DAMHIK. Impossible to treat every brand. Patron is the product of marketing. As tequilas go is mediocre at best. Don Julio and Reserva de la Familia are excellent recommendations. This last one is definitively pricey, so mixing it is down right sacrilegious. Another great one would be Tres Generaciones Reposado; the Añejo is very complex up there with Don Julio's añejo. Other excellent brand is Milagro, silver or reposado. Milagro Silver is so smooth its good for sipping. Orozco blanco is a very good newcomer. Another very underrated one is Cazadores reposado and Herradura reposado. Herradura blanco is what a traditional white tequila should taste like. There are too many new brands due to the demand in the US market. I am not impressed with any of them to stray away from the ones already mentioned. Enjoy.
kudzu Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 Thanks all for the info and suggestions! To educate myself a bit on tequilas, I bought Don Julio Blanco, Reposado and Anejo. For the gift, I bought the Don Julio 1942 Anejo. I should have just bought stock in Don Julio!
tallman Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Calvin's suggestion of a brandy snifter is a good one. You have some serious work ahead of you muchacho.

kudzu Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 ...You have some serious work ahead of you muchacho. ...Oh, the pains one must endure in the name of research. Enjoy. It is even worse than previously reported; things are spiraling out of control! A friend, taking advantage of my holiday spirit and general lack of self-discipline, talked my into getting a bottle of ET 70th Anniversary to compare to the DJ 1942. That ABSOLUTELY must to be the end of it for awhile! Besides the expense, I have to save a little bit of my brain and liver.
tallman Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 When you plant lime trees and buy stock in a salt mine, you've gone just about as far as you should.

Your brain and liver and destined to acquiesce sooner or later; you may as well give them some pleasure before then. I kinda like how easily you can be talked into the good stuff. Salud!
