Heads Up: Cherohala is Choppy

Just an FYI, in case anyone was heading to or through the Cherohala, be aware that the TN side is in pretty rough shape. Seems that they're in the process of re-paving, but instead of blacktop, they're using what looks like patch...just a thin layer of fine, sharp gravel and asphalt/tar.

It's not bad, but there's a lot of loose gravel on the surface, and your tires will pick up a lot of small shards along the way.

Rode the eastern 20 or so miles of the Cherohala today. Turned around when the flagman told us it would be 10 - 15 minutes before the lane would open in our direction to get through the construction area.

The new pavement is actually something other than the tar and chip variety and provides a very nice grippy surface. Don't know how it would be wet, but dry it was no problem.

I tried doing the Cherohala westbound on Tuesday morning, but encountered London-type fog at the 4,000' level. After a mile or two in it, common sense prevailed & I returned to Robbinsville.

Yes indeed we rode it about 10 days ago and when we hit the black top in Tennessee it was very slippery in the corners. Seemed like loose black gravel which was hard to identify. We had to slow way down as it was not safe to push the corners. The NC side was fine though.
