johnhunter44
I have a 2009 R1200RT that is about due for the 6000 mile service. I will take to dealership for them to do. Do they have to remove the plastic around the engine for this service? Do they do a valve check/adjustment? Link to comment
Joe Frickin' Friday
If you don't have valve cover guards in place, the tupperware won't need to come off for the valve adjustment that they will be doing. However, the tupperware does need to come off for the TB synch that they will be doing. Link to comment
Huzband
If you don't have valve cover guards in place, the tupperware won't need to come off for the valve adjustment that they will be doing. However, the tupperware does need to come off for the TB synch that they will be doing. And you're also due for tranny fluid replacment, which requires removal of the tupperware. Oh, & they'll do a loose valve check, but they won't do an end play check. PM me for details. Link to comment
BerndM
I thought the tranny fluid was a 12K interval Link to comment
Huzband
I thought the tranny fluid was a 12K interval You can go 12k with syn as I do, but dino is only good for 6k. Just my opinion, as oil is a very subgective subgect. Link to comment
hopz
To do the 12k job they will likely remove the plastic... but I am curious about your question. In BMW-land this is like opening the garage door before you drive away... it is simple, non-intrusive and fast once you do it a time or two. Literally, we shop-rats can open one up in about 10 minutes... or less with a power screwdriver. It is not a big deal. Now, if you have some reservations you could share with us, maybe we could put your mind at ease. OBTW- they might not really do a Throttle Body Synch--- they might use the big computer to check to see if there is an imbalance- if there is none, or it is within spec, they might not feel the need, thus might not take the plastic off. Ask the Service manager about this before the work starts. I have a feeling from reading some posts from new-guys that some dealerships, or maybe some mechanics "say" they do a TBS "check" which means invoking the computer- but don't really do the balance like we do on our own bikes. Nesbocaj
Does an exacting TB balance and valve adjust (not in that order) make a difference on the 1200's? As opposed to a dealer 'in spec' adjustment. My '04 1150 had the most beautiful smooth running engine and idle after I did the TB and valves. The '08 1200 is smooth everywhere but at idle, no matter what I do, even when opening up the valve clearance from spec (this did interesting things on the 1150). Nevertheless, time for a tuneup shortly, and to check the end-play, hoping for a smooth(er) idle. Link to comment
hopz
Yes.... it does. IMO put the valves to factory spec and leave them there. Unless you have really run up the miles (?50k?)... end play is probably not needed and should be avoided. Link to comment
johnhunter44
The reason I asked this question originally is that I currently have the cylinder protectors from machineart moto and I had to remove the plastic to install them, even though machineart moto says you can install them without removal of the plastic, only loosening the bottom panels so they can be flexed outward. If the dealer has to remove the plastic anyway, it shouldn't add much to the labor cost of the 6K mile service, but if they don't have to remove it, i was trying to decide if i should go ahead and remove them, then re-install them when I get the bike back, a lot more trouble for me, but if it saved me enough money, i would be willing.... dirtrider
Evening johnhunter44 As mentioned above for the dealer to do a PROPER service the plastic will have to come off. Some will just reach in using a long hooked pliers to remove the vacuum cap & vacuum hose then hook their computer hoses up the same way. At least for the initial balance check. If it’s close enough then that is as far as they go. Problem is the cost of plastic removal is figured into the service cost so you pay for it even if they don’t remove the plastic. Most won’t charge extra for removing the cyl head protectors if they are easy to remove & you are getting an expensive service but you really need to call your dealer to see what THEIR policy is. You might also ask if they will give you a bit of a price break on the service if you ride it in for service with the plastic already removed. Link to comment

Sorry, hopz, but that is completely backwards & wrong. End play needs to be adjusted as early as possible. Then it is likely to never need adjusting again. Link to comment
hopz
Thanks for the correction huz... I was/am fairly certain I heard different... cannot verify my source at this moment but...thanks. Link to comment
