Rainor
I just bought a R1200RT tank bag with the base that clips onto the tank. It's in quite good condition but the map cover is yellowed. Does anyone have a fix for this - either clear up the yellow or replace the map holder? Thx, Rainor Link to comment
Tony_K
Yellowing is irreversible. You could cut it out and sew a new one in... or live with it. Link to comment
CoarsegoldKid
This brings up questions as my map plastic is also yellowed almost beyond usable not to mention that it has also torn from map corners. Is there any map plastic that does not yellow? Are there map pouches from other manufacturers that are removable and purchasable? Do they stay clear with age? Link to comment
Tony_K
Well I can only help you with the alternative. A marine grade uv coated clear vinyl will work well. Something along the lines of strataglass. They send out free samples... simply request a piece the size of your map pocket and voila! Link to comment
1NOTRED
Mine not only yellowed, but ripped off partially returning from Panama City, Panama. Had lots of time to consider alternative fixes. Bought a piece of the heaviest clear plastic I could find (.020 in.) and loosely stitched it in place of the removed yellowed plastic. A heavy needle helped loop the nylon thread through the edge of the heavy canvas rim. It has turned out to be a great fix. Yeah, it is no longer waterproof, but maps always dry overnight. And, there's almost no wind buffeting to cause issues, so the awkward velcro flap is not at all necessary. I cut it off. So far no yellowing, and it's very nice to see the maps clearly. Would do it again... Link to comment
tallman
You can waterproof the maps. link Link to comment
Rainor
Anybody considered removing the old yellow plastic and attaching (either sewn or glued) a stand alone map pocket? Something like this one that is A4 size (~8"x11") ... https://www.junkyardfind.com/marushin-pack-map-pocket-accessory-for-pack-system-a-1398.html Link to comment
mrzoom
I bought a crossbar map case 10" x 10" from Riderwarehouse. #921 for $20.00 then removed the side buckle mounts and used hook and loop right over the old yellowed stock one. Works perfect, a little bigger window but fits the top of the bag, Also is clear on the flip side so you could hook and loop both sides for more mapping I've used it for 2 years and so far clear as new. Trajan
I used marine grade vinyl to replace the OEM vinyl on the bag. I got 60 gauge, the thickest there is, but then I have some other projects to use it for. You may want to use 40 gauge so you can roll the seal tighter. The OEM vinyl is like 10 guage. I also had my cobbler sew in two strips of Velcro pile so I could put stuff in the map case and have it stay in place. Next week it's going to get my name monogrammed on it. Link to comment
CoarsegoldKid
Based on the responses I now have a clear vinyl map window. My wife picked up a 36 x 50 inches or so for a dollar fifty from a plastics store. I cut out the yellow one and used super glue to glue it on. There may be better glues to use and I'll look into that and do it with another piece if it comes apart. Link to comment
KarlS
I had a marine seamstress replace the yellowed vinyl with some good stuff. Looks origional and no yellowing yet (one season). She said the BMW vinyl was junk. Total cost $75 Link to comment
Don_Eilenberger
Since the plastic was(is) trash - a suggestion.. try some xylene on a soft LINT FREE rag folded into a pad, rubbing quickly across the surface. This worked wonders on my BMW tankbags. Basically looked like new when done. The xylene dissolves the surface of the plastic, so your motions must be purposeful, and straight without stopping. The inside surface generally was still perfect - just the outside needed the treatment. Link to comment
