LGannon
My RT was stolen from the driveway last night, police recovered it soon after, the immobiliser worked, it had only been pushed a couple of streets away, anyway my question is how to jump start it, i think the battery will be flat as the lights were left on when it was recovered and the ignition wires were all shorted together, I think i can handle the ignition red and green should start it, so i need to remove the LHS fairing and I think the +ve lead goes onto the starter solenoid? but where do I ground the -ve lead? ltljohn
Glad the did not get far, were the police able to catch them? Last time I had to jump mine I was able to remove the 4 fairing screws on the right side from the seat forward; this gave me enough room to pull out the fairing and reach in with a long screwdriver clamped in the pos of the jumper cable. I clamped the neg to the sidestand. Be careful not to short things out. It helps to have another person assist you. best of luck. Link to comment
BFish
my 2004RT has a jumper/charger "jack" under the seat protruding from the battery area. check it out. Link to comment
barry1
when you remove the left hand side fairing is the neg terminal on the battery not exposed for you to connect to? Link to comment
ltljohn
Not very well it is tucked under the gas tank. Link to comment
Alfred02
I am sure you have your reasons, so this might be silly. But I have to ask. Can't you get a tow vehicle organized or a trailer? You don't want to do any more damage to your bike if at all possible. Is your bike insured against theft? If so, then your policy might cover towing anyway and if the towing company then causes damage, it will be covered. In that way, there won't be any argument with the insurance company who caused what damage. Just a thought.... Link to comment
Mark K
Why not just push it back to your house so you can remove and charge the battery at your convenience? Link to comment
LGannon
Its at a police compound, too far to push. IF it wont start easy I s going to get it towed as its covered by Insurance Link to comment
Alfred02
Its at a police compound, too far to push. IF it wont start easy I s going to get it towed as its covered by Insurance That's the way. Have a camera ready when it arrives at your place and take detailed photos and a couple while it's still on the trailer/tow vehicle. Make sure you catch any scratch/dint etc in photos. DON't give the photos to the insurance...not unless they dispute any claim/damage. Then you can use them. Link to comment
LGannon
Its home, couldn't get it to start even with jumper cables. I'm hoping its just a really flat battery as everything looks ok, Ignition is on RID is on,kill switch off, in neutral. faint relay click when i hit the starter button, Link to comment
Alfred02
That's entirely possible. If the battery is that flat, then it will actually drag down the other battery and still can't supply enough voltage/current. What you can do is leave the jumper leads hooked up for 10 minutes...this will bring up the bike battery to a working voltage. Then still with the jumper leads attached, try again. Here is the bad news. If the original battery has been dragged that low, then that battery now has been damaged. It might appear to come back up to proper voltage but will not be able to maintain it. So if you leave it standing for a fortnight, you most likely will find that your bike won't start again. If you have a multimeter handy (without the jumper leads attached, check the voltage..no load, i.e ignition turned off. 12Vdc and below and the battery is now very limited in it's usable life. LGannon
Thanks Alfred, I have it on a trickle charger now, will try it later this evening. Link to comment

LGannon
There's more to this than I initially suspected, either alarm or motronic problem, off too the dealers I'm afraid and let the insurance pay for it Link to comment
notacop
Having a bike stolen from the driveway is terrible. I always thought Ireland was a place of greenness and good music, not nefarious A-holes. Could it have been mischievous Leprechauns? Link to comment
boatzo
Put a good charge on the battery Les and then load test it, it might be drained beyond recovery? Link to comment
LGannon
I did charge it, shorted the solenoid terminals and the battery is strong enough to turn over the engine, but the starter won't turn from the starter switch? Link to comment
Alfred02
As you said...off to the dealer, it's an insurance case now and you don't want to muck about with the bike and end up getting blamed for whatever is wrong with it now. Link to comment
LGannon
wishfull thinking, dublin is as bad as any other city, i was lucky to get it back relatively intact. Link to comment
Mark K
Why not just push it back to your house so you can remove and charge the battery at your convenience? A misunderstanding on my part. I didn't realize the law had taken possession of your bike. I thought it was still sitting a couple blocks over. Best of luck to you! Link to comment
