how do I use this Android phone?

The Samsung Galaxy S II finally got released in Canada today, and I got one. (Rare example of a desirable product available in Canada before the US, but the UK and Europe have had it for a while).

Very nice piece of kit, but no users manual. I have figured out bits of it, but I am largely in the dark.

Where can I find a manual for Android 2.3.3?

I've been lusting for this phone now for the last few weeks.

I am in no way an expert as I've just started using a smartphone with Android Froyo just a couple months ago.

There is a 380 page manual for the Gingerbread here.

You must be older than 30. Knowledge and expertise in their operation discriminate based on the age of the user. My 23 yr old daughter uses her Droid with ease.

I have a Droid 2 and figuring out how to use it is painfully difficult.

There’s a certain ring of truth to what you say. On more and more consumer products of late manufacture’s positions on manuals is more or less, ‘We don’t do them anymore, people just figure it out.’

Now ISFA the “older than 30” part, I’m WAY past that and I definitely figured out (and rooted) my Android phone with ease. But then I’m a well-aged geek!

Rod,

What specifically are you looking for assistance on? I’d guess bet there are a lot of Android users here, it being the phome OS more aimed at and embraced by the geeks of the world.

I haven't even taken my galaxy S out of the box yet and theres a new one out. I kinda like my old stupid phone, I haven't had the time to figure out the new one yet.

The manual Rod pointed to has been helpful. Thank you, sir. After digging and redigging on the Samsung Canada web site, I found the device-specific manual. It is actually an excellent, well-balanced piece of technical literature.

On the other hand, after I transferred it from my computer to the phone, I found it was poorly formatted for the large-for-a-phone-but-ultimately-tiny screen. Sigh.

The "phone" is a marvel of computer technology. (We call it a phone, but that is only a small fraction of its function.) Six years ago, I had a 1 GHz pentium with a 1024x768, 17" CRT display with a total weight of at least 40 pounds. Probably set me back $1500 or more. This true microcomputer has a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a beautiful 800x480 4.3" OMOLED display, and sits comfortably in my shirt pocket. Off-contract it costs $650.

I got Angry Birds working, and that has made my commute much better. I will be watching a football game in the subway on my way home from work tomorrow. How good is that?

What more could a geek want? Well, easily accessible documentation would be a good start.

The primary computer of most of the world's population (with the exception of half a dozen of the G8 countries) sits in their phones. In fact there is more compute power in people's pockets than ever existed in total on the planet from the dawn of time thru 2003. Just amazing!

I got my Galaxy S last December and love it! It ranks only behind the bike and beer as my favorite (inanimate) thing. Yes, I think it even goes ahead of the desktop I'm using right now, newly rebuilt.

Even though I am over 30,I had little difficulty learning it but computers are in my blood since MS DOS v1. Now I just need to root it to 2.2 and I'll be good.

On contract I got a refurb for $0.01. Not a typo, 1 cent.

Edit:

Gotta ask: Which Angry Birds? Original, Seasons or Rio? Got all three and love them all. Try Alchemy, its crack for the phone.

I got Angry Birds working,

Quick! Before it’s too late – Select Uninstall NOW! That thing will make you crazy! It was clearly effecting my anger management program. And not in a good way.
