druggrepp
01 RTP1100 copbike with crashbars. It's a PITA to take fairings off with crashbars. Can I set valves with fairings on and I don't have flywheel tool to lock up flywheel. Can I take off alt cover and line up a mark to find TDC? Thanks from Texas Link to comment
Joe Frickin' Friday
You won't be able to remove the alt belt cover unless you remove the fairing and one of the "shark fins" (in front of exhaust header). The good news is that you don't need to remove the alt belt cover to find TDC. The cam sprocket has an arrow stamped into its side; all you need to do is get that arrow within +- 45 degrees of horizontal, and you're there. So pull a valve cover, put the transmission in top gear and then go manhandle the rear wheel (always rotate it forward, not backward): 1. watch for exhaust valves (in front part of cylinder head) activating. Keep moving the rear wheel. 2. Exhaust valves will close, and now you watch for intake valves (in rear part of cyl head) activating. Keep advancing the rear wheel. 3. Intake valves will close, and now you begin the compression stroke for that cylinder head. Keep advancing the rear wheel. 4. you will feel (at the wheel) the resistance of the compression stroke. When the resistance rapidly fades away, you are near/at TDC-ignition. Verify by examining the face of the cam sprocket with a flashlight: if the arrow is anywhere within +- 45 degrees of horizontal, then the valves are on the base circle of their cam lobes, and you are ready to adjust clearances. The bad news is that although you can set valve clearances with the fairings in place (thus ensuring that they don't burn up or peen themselves to death), it will be pretty much impossible to do a throttle body synch with the fairings on. Adjusting valve lash is only half the battle when it comes to making the engine run smoothly. Your best bet is to just bite the bullet and pull the crashbars and fairings so you can do the whole shebang. Link to comment
