KER
We have a bike that is going to need some engine work, so back story bike: 2001 1100RTP issues started with the TB, somehow the pulley on the right side was bent and got stuck at 3/4throttle while the other one worked normally. Bike was driven about 15-20miles before issue was corrected. After we got the bike home the cat was glowing red. Fixed the throttle issue and now there is little to no compression in the right cylinder. Bike fires up but appears to running on one cylinder now. Need to pull the plug and most likely the cylinder head to check the piston. Any ideas on what might have got burned before i crack into it? piston rings, head gasket..? Link to comment
Joe Frickin' Friday
If you actually had combustion on the right side, then it was very lean (and therefore very late) combustion; you've probably burned up an exhaust valve(s). If it was so lean that it wasn't lighting off in the combustion chamber at all, then it's possible that 20 miles of raw fuel coming into the cylinder was diluting the lubrication on the cylinder walls - in which case you've just worn the piston/rings/bore down. You said the cat was red hot; this would be true in either of the above scenarios. Was the righside header pipe also red hot? If so, then you had lean combustion in the cylinder. If not, there was no combustion and that cylinder was sending unburned mixture to the cat, where the fuel got oxidized and made the cat nice and warm. Your cat may also have been damaged. If they do emissions checks on your bike, there's a chance it won't pass, and you might need a new cat. Link to comment
