Eh2Zee
Today my clutch lever felt "soft" (or easy to pull) on my way home from work. I got home OK, all clutch operations seemed normal. Then I pulled into my garage, turned off the bike. Now there is no resistance to the clutch lever, and when I start the bike, there is no clutch operation when I pull the lever, and shifiting into gear obvioulsy stalls the engine. 2004 R1150RT with 33,400 miles onit. Any thoughts, troubleshooting tips? TIA. Stefan Link to comment
tomk99r11
Follow the cable to the back of the transmission. Is the nut on the adjuster gone or loose? Link to comment
Tobias
Hydraulic clutch on that model. I wonder if the slave cylinder failed. Link to comment
Eh2Zee
Thanks. That would explain it and therefore sounds interesting. Any way to check that? Really appreciate your help! Link to comment
Tobias
First thing would be to take off the lid of the clutch reservoir. If its empty, or low, I would look at the slave cylinder next. Unfortunatly its a big job to get in there. Link to comment
Jim Moore
Empty, low, or stinking of gear oil means a bad slave. Link to comment
dirtrider
Morning Stefan As mentioned, first check the clutch master cylinder reservoir for correct level (be careful that it doesn’t overflow all over your paint as the level INCREASES as the clutch wears). Then look at color & condition of the fluid. If very black or chunks of rubber in it then suspect a failed slave cylinder. With that limp lever it sounds like your hydraulic system is full of air & that usually comes up from the bottom due to a failed or failing slave cylinder. If the hydraulics are OK, & the fluid level is good then possibly a push rod problem or slave bearing problem. Link to comment
Eh2Zee
Thanks for your help, Tobias, Dirt Rider, and Jim! I wussed out and had the bike taken to the local BMW dealer for repair. And yes, the Slave Cylinder needs replacing. I was asked about doing the clutch while they were in there. But there had been absolutely no clutch slipeage. So I am hopeful, and declined the offer to spend more money now . SHould I be asking the dealer about the drainage groove for the next time the slave unit fails? Thanks again for your help, folks. This forum is AWESOME! Link to comment
