azkaisr
Anything going on this weekend around either New York or New England. I am stuck here until Tuesday in CT with nothing firm. As odd as this sounds, I am not that much in the mood to go into the city tomorrow. I may drive up to Boston or out to Mystic seaport. Any other cool ideas to spend a nice weekend here? jmseattle
Better than driving, take the train up to South Station in Beantown. Stay downtown and spend a couple of days walking around the city and Cambridge. Take a cab out to the No Name restaurant in Southie and sit with the locals eating fried clams and local seafood at communal tables. Get some pasta in the North End and catch some live Celtic music at the Black Rose near Faneuil Hall. Best of all, if they're in town, head to Fenway and try and score some tickets to a game; Fenway is best park in baseball. Beantown native now on the other coast... Link to comment
roadscholar
Tom, don't know if you have any interest in a sportscar trackday but there'll be a good one this Saturday at Lime Rock Park, it's a pretty little track in the NE corner of Conn., and a scenic drive up Rt. 7 to get there. They don't race on Sundays because of a church ordinance. Mystic Seaport was cool when I was there but it was thirty years ago. There are some great little roads around East Haddam and the Goodspeed Opera House too. Link to comment
DiggerJim
Cruise over to Mystic both the aquarium & the seaport village (19th century whaling village living history thing), go to Stonington if you're interested in seeing a couple of the biggest casinos in the world (Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun), go to the Foxwoods Native American Museum - it's outstanding & not particularly politically correct. They spent a qtr billion dollars on it and got it right. Take a ride thru central CT and cross over the CT River on the ferry in Hadlyme, ride up to Gillette Castle for a nice ride & a really cool museum (Gillette was an early performer of Sherlock Holmes & built a castle overlooking the CT River). Come back down and point the bike to the left and follow some nice twisty roads down to the coast (and maybe Mystic that way). The ride up RT 7 is a great one and good for a stop up at Kent State Falls for a cooling walk in the woods or a foot dip in the water at the falls. Head on up thru Canaan & check out the covered bridge, keep going NE and head into Litchfield and then swing back down thru Norfolk and Farmington or run down along the Naugatuck River (you'll follow the Housatonic on the way thru Kent northward). Stop at the TimeExpo (Timex) museum in Waterbury if you duck down RT 8. Stop at any diner along the way - they're almost all great. You can also cross the border up into MA and go thru Great Barrington, Stockbridge (Alice's Restaurant fame), Lenox, Lee, etc. Not sure if Tanglewood has a concert this weekend but that's worth a look. Back on the eastern part of the state, check out the "quiet corner" up RT 169 to Pomfret and stop at the Vanilla Bean Cafe - biker friendly, good food, great little place in the woods (and where Vanilla Coke was introduced) & often has live music on the weekends. Head west and check out the Munson's Chocolates store on RT 6 in Bolton for some really good locally made chocolate. Further west as you head towards Hartford you'll find Shady Glen Dairy Bar the home of the fried cheese cheeseburger (they fry the cheese to make it melty on the burger but crispy where it overflows - and a lot overflows because they take 4 cheese slices & use the corners to cover the burger with the rest draping over to be fried....hard to explain but unbelievably good). If you get to Middletown (RT 9) check out O'Rourke's Diner - an outstanding eating experience with some very non-diner foods. Brian is both Irish & a great chef who brings some interesting complexity to some traditionally simple food. There's also the Olympia Diner on the Berlin Turnpike south of Hartford - big chrome thing that's been featured in a lot of commercials and home to some fun bike & car meets every week. New Haven has Pepe's Pizza on Wooster St. Best pizza in the world (according to Food Network & hordes of ravenous pizza fanatics...I think it's second only to Grimaldi's in Brooklyn but the best pie you'll find in New England). Louis' Lunch in New Haven has good burgers - they claim to have invented the hamburger in fact. If that doesn't keep you busy, Newport RI is only a couple of hours away & good for a day's riding & walking around downtown (check out a couple of the mansion tours on Bellevue Ave). Mass & the rest of New England is only a couple or three hours north - the benefit of this small space is how close everything is (except Maine is 8 hours tall so don't let anyone talk you into going to Madawaska - stick to Portland & the outlets). If you can't find something to do you didn't really try very hard Link to comment
jmseattle
I remember O'Rourke's, and the Brass Rail bar, from my Wesleyan days. Great places Link to comment
