Lane splitting ? Filtering ?

I've been riding there a few times myself... but the RT with luggage and wife is a tad 'too much' to do what these guys are doing.... so I played nice.

I do not believe they like to take the RTs into London. Some of them use the 800s for the London commute.

Pat H is one of the more famous? Notorious? He subtitles this one 7 minutes of riding without putting a foot down.

Idiots? Or just standard fare for UK city riding - with the cagers expecting the moves and, in most cases, not having a problem with it. London traffic in particular is very amenable to allowing other traffic to move - note the car being let in from a side-street in the second vid - and bikes filtering through the traffic is just another facet of this.

One of the tools of choice for London is the R1xxxGS, especially with the big metal panniers on - cars give a little more room.

That was pretty tame. I do better than that on a daily basis. I could show you a video of 40 minutes of riding in stop and go traffic on the 405 Fwy without putting a foot down, but you'd be asleep after about a minute...

The first video was not so much about lane sharing, as it was about unsafe passing and turning. IMO bluenapalm123 will most likely end up as a stain in the roadway, if he/she keeps those riding habits. It seems to me that it is riders that pass unsafely, turn from the wrong lanes and commit similar violations that give other riders a bad name. It contributes to the stereotype that all motorcyclists are psycho @$$holes.

Lane sharing is not as insane in reality, as it may seem to riders who have not done it at all, or have not had a chance to do it on a regular basis. None of the motorcycle traffic collisions I have investigated have been caused by lane sharing. The great majority involve speed, right-of-way violations, or lack of skill.

Now, I liked reading that...

If you could convince the rest of the country to follow suit, I would be happy. :)

I visited London back in the mid-80's and let me tell you what, those are the best motorcyclists I have ever seen in my life! I suppose I was most bowled over by the courriers. I'd stand at a rotary (or round-about, whatever), and I'd see a courrier get sandwiched by some cars and think to myself, "he's going down". Yet every time, out of the massive clump of metal, he'd emerge on his bike in full attack mode determined to reach his destination -- never touched, never even scratched. Looked like some sort of dare devil show at a State fair or something.

Very impressive. I couldn't do it, but very impressive nonetheless.

Whoa! Scared the you-know-what out of me. Lane splitting...is that what that was. They were all over the road. Not too cool.
