KTsRidin
Hi All, just wanted to relay something that happened to me this last few weeks. While putting on a few miles, I found myself with a windshield ('09 R1200RT) that would only go fully down and a quarter of the way up. I'm not sure how/why it stopped working. I did go down in some gravel and drove through a few significant wind/rain storms (a few that blew over semis), but I didn't recognize the issue in relation to one of these events. I visited a dealership in Grand Rapids, MI who suggested there was failure of the actuator and gearing since it was moving evenly. They did not have the parts and I needed to be on my way the next day. At my home dealership yesterday the service tech took a look at it and called out one of the master mechanics to take a look and see if he could determine what parts might be needed. Karl looked at the up/down and suggested it wasn't a mechanical issue at all, but that the system needed to re-set itself. I asked how we'd do that and was told it was an easy hook-up to the computer. So, I turned the bike off again after the assessment and then turned it back on with Karl still standing there, and wouldn't you know it, the windshield started moving on it's own... and to it's full height! After over 13k miles of my head in the wind and noise, the sucker re-set itself without any intervention. Dumbfounded I looked at Karl. All he said was, "these things can be a bit touchy." Holy crap! So, all it took was to have the mechanics aura signal the bike that it needed to set itself straight and it did so. But seriously, we didn't do anything different than what I'd been doing for days and yet it chose that moment to reset. I don't know if anyone else has had this happen, but just in case you have a shop suggest a mechanical failure and the system looks like it's moving well but just not the full range of motion, know that it could be a simple computer re-set. Happily out of the buffeting wind and noise, Kirsten Link to comment

mbelectric
Kirsten, yes mechanics have that aura and power to be able to wish things fixed... Happy to see you back here and your finish of 6th fantastic. Missed the IBA commentary, but did the RT go down? Saw your pics. MB> Link to comment
KTsRidin
Missed the IBA commentary, but did the RT go down? Saw your pics.MB> Yes, Leg 1 gravel nap in MO. Lost nearly 3 hours and had to make the difficult choice to bag KY state/capital. It meant I had to pick up KY in Leg 2, but I was still able to go to all the capitals in that leg and got every point available. Got into checkpoint 2 in time to get a tire swap (back to the PR3s I rode in Leg 1), get scored, a get a few hours sleep before the 10pm Leg 3 bonus listings were handed out. Phew, it was a whirlwind! Link to comment
SageRider
all it took was to have the mechanics aura signal the bike that it needed to set itself straight and it did so It works for any type of service. Machines have a big fear of wrenches invading their privates, and tend to cooperate if at all possible to avoid the invasion. Sometime there are masochist machines that like the feel of wrenches invading their privates. Phil (1BMWFan) buys them... Glad your gravel drop didn't do any major damage to you or the bike. KTsRidin
Glad your gravel drop didn't do any major damage to you or the bike. Still have gravel imbedded in the head, but no real damage. I was a bit sore for the rest of the rally, but again, no real damage... guess the bike and I are a bit on the tough side Link to comment

DaveTheAffable
Still have gravel imbedded in the head, but no real damage... No worries. I've had gravel in my head for years. My wife will tell you... But, how's the bike? Link to comment
KTsRidin
I have to ask, PR3's is your choice because...... I was REALLY happy with my PR2s and their performance and had heard great things about the 3s in wet conditions, so I took a gamble and went with the 3s. The only time I ever felt the need to moderate my speed due to riding conditions was when there were winds blowing over semi's. So, short report - good stuff. Still have gravel imbedded in the head, but no real damage... No worries. I've had gravel in my head for years. My wife will tell you... But, how's the bike? Tooooo funny! The bike is AMAZING. Needless to say, if it wasn't for it's performance I wouldn't have had a podium finish! Link to comment
