Seat/Comfort Mods

I was able to install luggage side and back frame and supporting tubular frame from an RT on my R1150RS. This required notching the rear body side panels and the rear of the body tail piece, but it was pretty easy. I have re-keyed the case cylinders to match my ignition key, and I am ready for some touring, except for the seat, which is not very comfortable on extended rides.

I bought an extra seat and am thinking about building my own touring seats:

In comparison to other touring bikes, the RS rider's seat is shorter and the passenger seat longer than on most bikes. I would like to make the riders seat a little longer (and wider) and the passenger seat a little shorter. I don't think I can do this on the stock pans with the stock mounting points and brackets. Does anyone know if I can switch out the seat mounting brackets from, say, an R1100R or an R1100/1150RT for the stock brackets on my RS? This would give me a lot more options on obtaining a used comfort seat. I guess I am asking if the geometry (angle and length) and mounting bolt locations of the mounting area is the same. Based on my work mounting the RT rack, I think the RT and RS seat mounting geometry is identical but I am not sure if the gas tanks are identical and whether the length of the seat area is identical. RT and R seat mounting brackets are available cheap on e-bay. I don't know if the key lock/release on the RS passenger seat would work with an R or RT seat, but I would think I could use the lock that came with the R or RT mounting brackets to secure the seats.

Could you please post a photo of your RS with the RT luggage racks and handles installed? I am considering the reverse configuration of an RS handles and crossbar on my RT and wonder if it will bolt right up, and what it might look like... thanks. -John

I don't have a site from where I can post photos. I can send them by e-mail, but I did not have an RS side rack and handle before. All I had was a plastic handle which looped behind the passenger seat. You can get an idea of how the RS side rack and bar would look by looking at the fairing/case holder blowup for the RS on the Max BMW site: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51763&rnd=03252011 The side racks look the same as the RT, but I don't think they are, and they have different part numbers. I think the system side cases will fit either bike, but I don't think the rear ends of the side racks are identical. The rear rack of the RT fits under the rear ends of the side racks, while the simple cross bar on the RS looks like it bolts on top of the side racks, but I am not sure about that.

There does not seem to be a lot of knowledge out there on interchangeability of accessories from model to model. I am still hoping someone out there can answer my question in another post about interchanging seats from R or RT to RS.

I read in another thread that the seats will not directly change between models. I don't recall reading or seeing if the mounting brackets for the seats are interchangeable.

I have used the DIY seat method on my Honda Silverwing Scooter. It worked well, and was pretty easy to do. The result wasn't fancy looking like a Russel or Corbin (it looks stock, unless you look closely) but the comfort increase was IMMENSE. I couldn't ride for more than about 2 hours comfortably on the scooter prior to the mod, after the mod, I easily rode all day long, with no butt pains in the evening or morning after riding. Depending on the seat layout, you may actually not need the extra length that you think. If you can increase the width and carve a hind-end depression shape into the foam, you may not feel the need for extra length.

Anyway, good luck w/the modifications!

Nice site. That makes me seriously consider cutting into my GS seat instead of sending it out to have a Russell made.

Believe me that the Russell seat is SURELY great for your butt. I wouldn't ride on anything else after using a DayLong seat on my 1150RT

Glad that worked for you.

They don't for me.

So, anecdotal score 1 - 1.

Before buying a big dollar aftermarket seat try to find one to sit on, or even go for a ride.

Best wishes.
