Guest Kakugo
Went over to Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the weekend for the annual BMW meeting. Turned out a bit different than I expected. The original plan was to rode to Reutte (Tirol in Austria) on Friday afternoon, sleep there, go to the event on Saturday, ride back to the hotel on the evening and ride home on Sunday. It all went well and according to plan at first. Rode up the Bernina pass in the Graubunden (Switzerland), very nice ride in fine weather (I have a video of the descent I'll post as soon as as it's edited), picked up Al, a friend of mine, near St Moritz and proceeded to make our way through the Engandin to Austria. Again nice weather, plenty of bikes, though roads are being resurfaced (they needed it ). A few miles after crossing the border it begins to really piss down and temperatures start to drop to around 10°C (50F). We pull over to waterproof ourselves and discuss plans. I know the area and want to avoid the dreaded Ferpass at all costs. I suggest we ride through the Hahntenjoch, my riding mate says "no, better the Fernpass, it's at lower quote". I already know I am in for quite a ride: the Fernpass is an extremely busy road and I hate it guts. And so it is: during the ascent we get stuck behind a slow moving column caused by a big lorry with an asthmatic engine. After getting into "raging bull mode" I manage to overtake everything (in Austria you can overtake everywhere unless otherwise specified), I slow down to wait for my mate who isn't exactly the image of speed and is realizing the foolishness of his decision. We start the final leg of our journey: heavy rain, heavy traffic and temperatures in the 10°C range. But we finally manage to get to the hotel. To be continued... Now pictures time! From the hotel room: really happy we didn't opt for camping. Is it snowing up there Al? Link to comment
Guest Kakugo
Saturday morning greeted us with cold but good weather. Rode to Ga-Pa through the Plansee and Bayerische Wald. Cold but very pleasant and zero traffic. In Ga-Pa we were greeted by the usual spotless organization. Parked near the ice skating center. And look what was near my little RT: They either arrived very early or caped there overnight. Special models started right away in the parking lot: To be continued... Link to comment
Guest Kakugo
This is the scenery of the Spitz group: My mate told me we are right under one of the most famous ski tracks (or whatever they are called) in the world but I know jack about skiing so I'll take that as a fact. I am not envying you, brothers! Very interesting: this is the dirt track where you could test ride any Husqvarna off roader currently in production. Short but very varied and with different surfaces: mud, loose gravel, sand etc. Sadly I didn't have the right clothing... German riding school using S1000RR "Hothead" bikes. In the '80s a Swiss had the idea of building a two wheeled car using a K100 engine. After a bit of financial turmoil they are still with us with the infamous Monotracer, now using the K1200LT engine. You could even take one for a test ride drive in the area. Still very few takers. Link to comment
Lone_RT_rider
Garmisch is absolutely wonderful this time of year. We were there last year at this time. Amazing area. We actually stopped at that same lake in your earlier pics. Link to comment
Guest Kakugo
That would be the Plansee. Very nice, you usually meet about a million bikes for every car. Anyhow here's a nice classic bike: Note this bike is ridden regularly: later in the day we met it again on the road. Parts bin special galore! The two millionth bike built in the Berlin works: fittingly enough it's a GS, Europe's favorite bike. That old hag walked in front my camera without asking... To be continued. Link to comment
Guest Kakugo
More pictures... Off road sidecar built around an airhead unit turned around to allow it to run a chain transmission on the cheap... Gotta love the '80s... all it needs is a rider with giant mall hair. F800GS hill climbing special, too bad Rachau went belly up a few years ago. Camhead R1200GS sidecar. Don't ask what the cow is doing on the passenger seat... Continue. Link to comment
Alfred02
Great photos If you have anymore, keep them coming. When I was still living in (West) Germany, (Born and bred), I wasn't interested in motorbikes yet, but I did own a BMW 2002 car. Great to see some history. Link to comment
