Hi. I just took took delivery on a new 2011 RT. I've been a long time BMW rider and have my 200k award, Most recently a 99RT on which I piled on 130k, followed by a 650 vee Strom which I really liked, Then a 1200R, on which I couldnt get the wind problem sorted out, so I traded it for the RT. I have been on this forum for over 10 yrs and appreciate the good info that comes from it. many questions to come.

The first one is about tank bags and top case. The saddlebags are big and heavy and they would travel mostly empty. I would have liked city lids, but the dealers say they are not quality products and I should stay away, any comments?

My next option is a topcase other than the factory version. I would like it smaller and considerly less expensive. Also want a not to large tankbag. Any suggestions from the forum would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Don

I just bought a TourTech Flat Tank Bag that has a nice tight fit to the tank rails on my R1200RT. It's a small bag (inside dimensions are 3" deep x 9"wide x 13" long). Has a little more depth at the seat end as it curves down the tank rail. Perfect for the small stuff and electronics one might carry. Attaches with a button type strap which fastens to the tank rails at the triple tree end and then is velcroed at the seat end of the tank rails. It has a nice sized map window and does not interfere with controls or riding position. The only negative is the zipper has small teeth unlike my Marsee bag which has a nice large zipper that is much easier to operate going down the road. Not sure about the rain protection yet. Price was $164. Hope this helps.

My saddlebags go on twice year, top box is on permanently.

Favourite topbox would be a medium priced Givi or a lower priced Shad (there was a recent thread on Shad boxes if you search).

I have the BMW tankbag becuase there were no after-market ones when I bought my machine in mid-2005.

I had the BMW City Lids on my previous 2003 K1200GT. I bought the non-BMW City Lids for my new 2011 R1200RT since it's my commuter here in lane-splitting-friendly California. The non-BMW City Lids are single-walled, like my previous BMW City Lids, so they aren't as stiff as the new double-walled R1200RT lids. I would say the new City Lids are comparable to the old BMW City Lids. My dealer had his painting subcontractor sand the non-BMW City Lids smooth and paint them Polar Metallic to match... Very nice! I'm more than satisfied. :)

Congratulations on the new ride. If you are not looking for a hard top case BMW makes two soft top bags, one over 50 liters, one around 30 liters. I use the 50 liter.

Go to the Max parts fiche and they are there. Not lockable, but quick on and off.

I got a $14 travel bag, black, rectangular, waterproof, doesn't leak, never tore, at WalMart. I use 2 10' straps to strap it on the tail of my bike. It doesn't say 'BMW' on it, but if it did, they should pay me to have that one.

I have a smaller one also, it maybe was $19. I don't need to advertise for BMW. The bike already does that for them. Free.

Thanks for the input. I bought a Givi 33 ltr trekker for the top case and I will be getting the Cortech Dryper tank bag. I took off the stock bags because they are too big and wide. I saw some references to the city lids. I contacted Max and AS, both said the lids were of poor quality and they no longer handle them. Any experience out there, Where do I get them if I want to give it a try?
