Horn stopped working after stall and quick restart of motor

Coincidence or is there a correlation?

Had to make an semi-fast stop on the freeway during rush hour today(40mph to 0mph...no ABS engagement though). Anyway, I didn't pull the clutch in at 0mph and the engine stalled. Traffic was heavy and I had to immediately restart the engine. Engine started immediately. No problem.

Shortly after that, I decided to test my horn. It didn't work. I got home, turned the bike off, then restarted (after going through the initialization). The horn still doesn't work.

Initial checking indicates all other electrical components are working (e.g., lights, Zumo that is hard wired into the accessory plug at the front, accessory socket, etc.).

I don't think there is a correlation but....

Anyone ever hear of this? I can't remember the last time I used the horn but I do know that when I pressed the button, the horn sounded.

I have a 2010 R1200RT so there are no fuses.... btw, it's over 100 degrees in Houston today. Not sure if that should matter.

Your horn should still be under warranty.

If you want to check it yourself just unplug the connector at the horn then place a 12 volt test light across the removed connector terminals then push the button.

As a quickie maybe try—key-on then have someone hold the horn button in while you give the horn itself a sharp rap with a piece of wood or a socket extension.

Might be a bad horn or maybe the horn is full of water, or could be somewhere else like the horn switch or ZFE or wiring in between.

Thanks.

I went out to the garage today to check it out. Seems there is a beeping sound coming from under the seat. I suspect that is the horn relay squawking at me. Will take it to the dealer this afternoon.

Wouldn't imagine theres a horn relay unless it was installed by an owner to handle a high-draw aftermarket horn.

I'm the original owner; no aftermarket horn.

I wonder what the intermittant beeping is?

Will be interesting to see what the technician at the dealer finds out.

Very curious indeed.

Does your bike have an alarm installed?

Yes it does. The alarm still works (aftermarket with it's own siren/horn).

The intermittant beeping is NOT coming from the alarm siren/horn.

No power to the horn. Not sure why...yet. Probably the switch/button as I wouldn't think the wiring would be bad in <8 months.

Posting only to see if anyone else has had horn button/switch issues on 2010 R1200RT.

You sure you're not hearing the exhaust flapper valve cycling--does it every time you turn the key on? Makes a sort of clicky-chirp-buzz sound....

Not wishing to play devil's advocate, but I had to wait to pick up my 2006 RT from new, as one of the indicators wasn't working on delivery, due to a wiring fault. Temp repair made until first service when harness replaced.

I've got an OEM horn taken off my 06 GS...replaced with a Stebel.

Let me know if you're interested.

PM me.

Thanks for the offer but it's not the horn, it's the wiring or switch...and it's all under warranty.

Slight hijack:

The horn on my 06 RT temporarily went out on me last weekend. I was on a PGR ride bringing home a soldier for his last leave before going to the sandbox, and we escorted them through the downtown areas of a couple mountain towns, honking horns at all the fine Americans standing on the sidewalks waving their flags. I went "beep-beep-beeeee---- silence"

Apparently BMW only wants you to use their horns for a limited time? After restarting, all was, well, well.

  • 2 weeks later...

RE: No horn sound. Finally had the opportunity to leave the bike at the dealer for diagnosis. It turns out the switch is kaput. So, the bike will stay in the shop til the part comes in and is installed.

Really hate to not have it available for a week 'cause it's been a real gas riding the scoot to work in the Houston summer. 88-90 degrees in the morning and up to 105 degrees during my afternoon ride home on the ~10 lane super-slab.

Btw, this is Houston, Texas...it's *not* a dry heat ;)
