Francois_Dumas
I know about the GoPro camera, but am wondering about the quality of the Contour HD camera. Anyone with experience here? Link to comment

DiggerJim
I know about the GoPro camera, but am wondering about the quality of the Contour HD camera. Anyone with experience here? I have the Contour HD (but not HD GPS) camera mounted on my 1200RT on a BMR shelf next to my GPS. Good in one way because it's behind the windshield and as a result I think cuts the wind noise (although it could also be the gain setting I'm using). The downside is that when the windshield is up, the left windshield strut is in the lower left of the pic due to the wide angle lens. The other downside is that it requires a hookup to the PC to make changes to some of the settings (although you get two resolution settings selectable via switches on the camera). The camera switches are actually user settable in terms of what they do - you pick which combination of resolution & FPS for each switch and then you can make those changes without the PC link. I also bought an extra battery so the power matches the capacity of the SD card I have in it. The new HD GPS model allows you to download an app for your iPhone that allows you to see what the camera is seeing & set the parameters from the phone (I think there's another adapter needed that hangs off the phone though even though it's bluetooth). It's pretty cool and a fun toy. Not critical for what I do, but I could see lots of uses for instructors or people who do a lot of group rides. Link to comment
Mike O
Can't speak to the Contour product being marketed today, but I wasn't impressed with the previous edition. I opted for a slightly more expensive camera. The VIO POV.... Originally designed for more military/law enforcement use and now marketed for the 'sports' (and motorcycle and auto) crowd. What I liked about it over the competitors was: - Super long battery life (I've gone 6+ hours) and uses standard AA batteries - Long recording time (ditto 6hours) - standard SD cards - camera with very wide focal 95 to 142 deg) - Lots of mounting options (and this is key IMHO) - Most important to me - comes with a video screen so you can view your camera angles and to review your footage (without this you have NO clue how well your camera angle or footage is until you get stuff back on your PC/MAC - kind of a shame to discover that AFTER the ride). - Mine is 720P (CD quality and plenty good enough) but there are HD versions available in the last 12 mos since I got mine. One word of advice. I've tried mounting the camera in numerous places ON the bike, and invariably the bike has vibrations that affect the video quality. My best solution so far has been to attach the camera to my helmet. Good luck... I've had a lot of fun with mine. is a rather marginal uploaded video (I'm still playing around with proper mounting angles) and I've also discovered some of the post video transcoding that iMovie offers to upload to YouTube results in 360p (vs the higher definition the camera actually records). And by the way, the day this was shot we're seeing a LOT of wildfire smoke from AZ. Have FUN...! Mike O Link to comment
Francois_Dumas
Thank you both ! I now discovered the Contour+, which looks to have a much better quality and wider angle, easier operation than the HD and GPS. But it is also much more expensive (499 Euros here). I liked the 200 $ approx. price of the HD over the GoPro..... still more 'figuring' to do :-) Link to comment
sgendler
I like my contour gps. It has tons of mounting options (though you have to buy most of them separately). The thing that pushed me to the contour was the bluetooth viewfinder app on my iphone. It's really nice to be able to see what you are shooting when you are setting up the camera, especially if helmet mounted. I only use it on my bicycle, so I've gotten nearly no use from the GPS feature. I'm not covering enough ground over the length of a video clip to warrant bothering with it. Link to comment
