DallasR1100RT
I was at a bike race this weekend and another R1100RT owner asked my I had not performed a Can'ecktomy on my bike? He said it would make it run better...increase gas mileage...yadda yadda yadda. Is this something I should do or not? Thanks Mark Link to comment
OoPEZoO
It doesn't do squat for performance or economy. The only thing it prevents is the potential for a clogged charcoal cannister.......which I have only read of once or twice. I yanked mine off of my RT when the mileage started getting up there (above 100k miles) because I was getting concerned about it possibly plugging itself up. That being said, it was probably fine and could have been left alone. Link to comment
W. Mazelin
I yanked the cans off of my GS and my wifes RS - only after they were gummed up to the point where they ceased to work. You will lose about a 1kg or so of useless weight; that's all. Link to comment
dirtrider
Afternoon Mark The escaping hydrocarbons from a hot gas tank is one of the largest air polluters on your motorcycle. So removing the evap canister for no “good” reason is a pretty environmentally unfriendly thing to do. On the other hand if yours fails they very expensive to replace. A Keith mentioned you won’t gain any performance or fuel economy & if you store the bike through the winter that evap canister helps keep the fuel fresher & some of the moisture out of the gas tank. A good rule on the older BMW evap canisters is to just monitor your fuel tank when opening the gas cap after a long ride. If you start noticing a whooshing or vacuum in-rush sound when opening the gas cap, or the cap is difficult to open you should then consider removing the canister as it is plugged or plugging. If you wait after that then you risk damaging your fuel gauge sender inside the tank. Link to comment
Edgar
When I removed my canister I got the 2 bars back on the fuel gauge. Have you adjusted your clutch from the left yet? Link to comment
DallasR1100RT
I used to get all the bars on the fuel gauge when I filled up and now I don't get the top bar...maybe I am becoming plugged?? Clutch adjustment is fine...I even had the BMW shop in San Antonio ride they bike and they said if feels just fine. Link to comment

Its no more enviromentaly unfriendly than the thousands of bikes in the uk or millions worldwide without an evap canister! Link to comment
Hotdog
I removed the canister (2001, 50K miles), cut it apart, and made it in to a tool kit. The inside of the can was rusty and the "charcoal pellets" were stuck together in a hard block. The metal filter was rusted and partially blocked. This device probably should be removed or replaced periodically. Link to comment
oldironhead
I just did a Google search for activated charcoal. Found several places that will sell you the stuff in whatever granular size you need for around for around $20 per 5 pound bag, (a gallon jug, way more than you need). You think you could refill the can on the cheap? Link to comment

oldironhead
I just took the cannister off my 96 R1100RT and it was totally clogged. I tried to cut it open, and it just fell apart. Rusted to pieces. This bike only has about 27k miles on it. Obviously they will deteriorate with time, as well as mileage. Maybe it has something to do with how and where the bike was stored. So for now, I just secured the three hose ends with a zip tie. I guess I could put some small in-line lawnmower type fuel filters on the ends of the hoses going to the tank and the solenoid, to keep bugs and dust out of the fuel system. The dealer wants 120 bucks for a new one. Beemerboneyard recently sold a used one for 35 bucks. Can I be sure that a used one will be any better than what I'm replacing. Link to comment
dirtrider
Afternoon oldironhead You really shouldn’t just leave the hoses open. You should plug off the one going to the vacuum solenoid, if you don’t it will introduce a vacuum leak into the intake on a warm engine during the normal purge cycle. Then hook the one coming from the fuel tank to the one running down behind the R/H foot peg as that is how non evap canister equipped BMW’s are vented. That will keep moisture from being sucked into the fuel tank as the tank volume goes down & is replaced by ambient air (lots of flying water from the rear tire if you just leave it hang out the rear) Link to comment
