Rex R
Hi guys, I'm sure this one has been covered before, but I'm not coming up with anything in my searches... Can anyone post a link to instructions (preferably with pictures) or provide instructions for replacing city case lids with the system case lids? I think it's just a matter of drilling out the rivets and either bolting in the new covers or riveting them in place. Thanks for the help! Link to comment
dirtrider
Morning Rex R If you are going to swap the lids back & forth just drill the rivets out & install 4mm stainless steel allen flat head cap screws using nylock nuts. Put the screw heads on the inside & the nuts on the outside. If attaching permanently you can re-rivet using BMW pop rivets (very expensive) or if you are in the USA just dill the holes out slightly & go with cheaper 3/16” aluminum pop rivets. Link to comment
AndyS
Yep, it's as simple as that. So, when the time comes to go touring, just undo the nuts remove the washers, pop off the city lid, on with the normal lid (or extra large monster lid 71607652736 & 71607652735), replace washers and nuts and ready to roll. Rex R
Thanks, guys. stainless steel 1" 8-32 round-head screws work great, too. I put the screw head on the outside and used a standard nut and tightened a cap nut against it to lock the hardware in place and to protect the contents. A 9/64" drill bit worked great on the rivets. Had to use a pair of vise grips to pull scraps of the rivets out of one hinge and ended up scratching it. When I do the next saddlebag, I'll protect the hinges with some tape. Hope this thread helps the next guy. Link to comment
AndyS
Hi Rex, can't you get metric hardware? Why mix the dreaded imperial threads with a Metric motorcycle? Andy Link to comment
Rex R
I live in the states; metric hardware is a little tougher to come by. And small screws like this... in stainless steel... with cap nuts... Well, it's just not worth wasting time shopping for. Especially not when I have hardware that is only about .0001" different at home. If I were purchasing large quantities, it might've been worth ordering. But if it bothers you so much, maybe you can mail the proper metric hardware to me from GB. Link to comment
AndyS
I am a little confused. When I go to my screw suppliers, I can buy Metric Course, Metric Fine, Cycle Thread, UNF, UNC, BA, BSF, BSW, etc without the vendor batting an eyelid. Is that not the case in USA, where you seem to have everything readily available? Andy Link to comment
