1350cfm
If this site is anything like KTMTALK I'm sure there are volumes of discussions on which oil is best in a Boxer Engine. I run Rotella in all my KTM's from the 50's to my 250 2 stroke with a Rekluse clutch, My 525 with a standard clutch and even my 950 Adventure and have never had an issue. Now with my BMW having a dry clutch...... Give me the condensed version of what oil to use or not use. I tend to change my oil frequently so I try to be cost effective with my oil choices. Phil50
Castrol ActEvo 20w-50 is what BMW dealers in UK use on R1150** bikes. I've been using that but am going to change to Motul 3000 4T 20W-50 at next oil change. Andy (Boffin) uses Rotella but in UK in only appears to be available in bulk drums. You need to at least put your bike and where in the World you are in your profile otherwise you may get the wrong advice. Link to comment
1350cfm
Well if there are no issues that anybody knows of I suppose I will use Rotella in it. Link to comment
Phil50
No doubt Andy will chime in later. Link to comment
dirtrider
Morning 1350cfm I won’t try to talk you out of using Rotella but remember it is only a 15w40 oil not a 15w50 oil. The synthetic version is a 5w40 oil. Look in your riders manual to see if your riding conditions & riding temperatures allow the use of a either a 5w40 or 15w40 oil. Also do some research on the new emission friendly Rotella-T--- at one time the Rotella T Triple Protection 15W-40 and synthetic 5W-40 CJ-4 did meet the JASO MA rating. Not sure if it still does as motor oils change about monthly anymore due to changing motor company requirements for emission system protection.. All I can offer you is go by your riders manual on weight and oil requirement then re-search the oil you intend to use to make sure it STILL meets those specs. Link to comment
1350cfm
I will do a bit more research, But while we're on to oil changes..... Like I said earlier this is my first BMW. I know many bikes have a different procedure for chainging oil. I certainly don't want to remove any bolts that may or may not be drain plugs and actually hold something important inside the engine ect. I assume there is a Beemer Newbie tech article somewhere on oil changes? Link to comment
film842
The parts guy at the BMW dealership told me yesterday that BMW was now recommending 10-40 oil in all their bikes. Anybody heard this? Link to comment
Danny caddyshack Noonan
Try these. First like is what you requested, second and third are the libraries full of all sorts of cool stuff to occupy your spare, non-riding, time. Oilhead Maint. adv wisdom bmwst wisdom Link to comment
Boffin
Any oil that meets the API spec in the handbook and the right viscosity spec for your local temperatures. I have never heard of any oil-related failures on BMW boxers that were not caused by losing the oil one way or another. In short, it does not matter one whit which oil you use, dino, semi-synthetic or synthetic as long as the API spec and viscosity is in the handbooks range. Andy Link to comment
4wheeldog
The parts guy at the BMW dealership told me yesterday that BMW was now recommending 10-40 oil in all their bikes. Anybody heard this? In their NEW bikes, yes, that is true. But in oilheads, something ending in 50 is needed for most general use. If you never ride above 60 degrees F, and never get stuck riding slowly in a traffic jam, you can probably get by with 10/40. Link to comment
Paul Mihalka
Frequent changes? Cost effective? Walmart Supertech 20/50. Link to comment
Selden
Son of a gun, I had no idea that SuperTech 20W-50 existed. I guess I'll have to look harder next time I'm at Wally World. Link to comment
Eckhard Grohe
I put 10/40 in my bike once and I changed it a week later. The engine was really noisy with it. Went back to 20/50. In short, it does not matter one whit which oil you use, dino, semi-synthetic or synthetic as long as the API spec and viscosity is in the handbooks range. Right on Andy. If your not looking for extended service why waste money on synthetic. Link to comment
