Just heard on the news that Angeles Crest is opening after a year of being closed. Have fun.

Why were they closed for a year?

Either the mountain fell on the road, or the road fell off the mountain.

Seriously, these roads are somewhat remote and don't have a purpose beyond recreation. That keeps them near the bottom of the budget.

Only some of it open, you can get to Newcombs but not all the way to Wrightwood. A lot of equipment and work going on at the top end of 39, what's the chance of them finally opening up that route?

Slim to none I would guess.

Because 39 does this far more often than you would think!

Sonora & Ebbets (CA108, CA4) still closed due to snow...

Only to Newcombs??? Damn. I had heard it was opening all the way to Wrightwood. :(

Still planning a Wednesday ride to check it out.

PS: it was closed due to the damage from the Station Fire. guardrails burned up, road buckled and the ensuing rains ensured slide damage everywhere. ACH is the CA-2, a california highway that runs the backbone of the San Gabriel mountains connecting little communities north of the mountains to the greater San Gabriel valley. It's a minor artery for people living in pretty remote areas. Too bad it's expensive to maintain and doesn't generate a lot of revenue for the state.

Why were they closed for a year?

We had some REALLY heavy rains (for California) about 3 or 4 years ago and part of the road washed out, so it was closed for over a year. When it finally re-opened, it was only open a couple of months and we had the largest wildfire EVER in Los Angeles County and everything along a big section of Hwy 2 burned to the dirt including all the guardrails and signs etc. That wasn't too bad but then a month or so later, we had another onslaught of torrential rains, and since all the vegetation was burned away, we had HUGE dirtslides and road undermining which destroyed the just repaired highway AGAIN.

So here we are again. The hwghway has been shut down for about 3 out of the last 4 years.

At least we are going into summer now, so hopefully no more landslides. By the time the next rainy season starts, there should be enough new vegetation to prevent more damage, we hope!

The total length from end to end is about 70 excellent miles.

I've attached a picture below

Bernd

Actually it's not an artery for anyone. L.A. county no longer has any remote areas. 15, 14, 210 are faster and closer and more useful than 2 to outlying communities (which they are not anymore).

The mountain range road is more of a capillary...

I used to run AC back in the late 80's on my Kawi 750 Turbo. Was riding up with a few friends at a very good pace (130+) when we turned one sweeper and there was a CHP officer standing in the middle of the road. Flagged us over and said "you guys were really flying coming up the hill; we were watching you the whole time. Now, do you think you can turn around and go back down like you have SOME sense?" To that we replied "yes officer", and he let us go

It's been open between Newcomb's and Wrightwood for some time. The area around ACH & AFH has been closed requiring a detour using Upper & Lower Big Tujunga and a short stretch of AFH. Today they re-opened the stretch from Mount Wilson to La Canada.

Well JPL employees used to vanpool from Palmdale over AFH. (Only found out about it when one of their vans went over the side.)

A number of postings from local newspapers say it's open to Wrightwood... I don't know.

But:

"Angeles Crest has one of the highest accident rates in the state,'' Hsu said, adding the CHP waited to make the grant announcement until Caltrans' announcement of reopening the road.

According to data from the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, 164 motorcycle-involved collisions occurred on Route 2 from Starlight Crest Drive to state Route 39 in Los Angeles County between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008. Among the collisions, eight were fatal, seven of which were the result of unsafe speed. Of those, speed was the primary collision factor for 98 of the accidents.

Therefore, in an effort to reduce the number of motorcycle-involved fatal and injury collisions along the 38-mile stretch of highway patrolled by the Altadena Area office, the CHP will establish a task force and develop and implement a public awareness campaign by working with local agencies and community members."

I have mixed emotions about this opening. It was very nice to have it as a personal playground without the LEO's patrolling it as often as before. They really do get to be a pain in the .... with their stopping us & writing people up for exhaust and blinker infractions.

Beats risking a bent rim on LBT.

As of Friday, the 3rd, it is open all the way to Wrightwood. There is another thread under "Ride and Event Planning."

Did it this afternoon and it was fantastic. There are lots of beautiful flowers blooming on the green hillsides, brand new pavement on the lower part, some corners that were tight are now sweepers and absolutely no motor patrolmen to be seen. :)

The road is open all the way to Wrightwood for now. Still have workcrews throughout the area and a controlled stop half way up to Nukes it was only a minute or two wait.

Great to hear! My buddy and I will be doing it tomorrow all the way to Wrightwood and back again. Any suggestions for lunch in Wrightwood?

We most always stop at the Grizzly Cafe for either a late breakfast or lunch. It's on the main road in and out of town just past the gas station.

Good food, friendly waitress's, large parking area inside a newer building.
